Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dropdown Box Filter in Grid Component

    Hi.

    I am trying to filter a dropdown box in a grid component without success. Basically, i have a session variable.vcompany_id which contains the filter value. When i make a direct reference in the choices section of the dropdown settings it works fine, but not using a session variable. I have also attempted to put the following code on the A5W page;

    Code:
    '============== Add Filter ==========
    DBF.filter = "company_id = \"" + session.vcompany_id
      field_info[16].DropDownBox.Filter = "company_id=" + session.vcompany_id

    '? session.vcompany_id
    '======================================
    The session.vcompany_id is Numerical.
    I simply wish to filter the dropdown box to only show the records in the 'sites' table equal to the session.vcompany_id.

    I have a table called sites containing

    SITE_ID
    COMPANY_ID
    Site_Name

    I have looked at the help files (filtering a grid with a session variable) but it does not seem to work. I have also scanned the forums, but could not find anything specific.

    Any help on this one is most welcome.

    Is this in the override section of the A5W page? Do you know that the session variable exists?

      I put this in the a5w page itself. I have tested the session.vcompany_id variable which has the value of 10001 but actually displays as 10001.000000 for some reason???

      When a user logs in the vcompany_id variable is carried throughout the application. The filter is required in the 'add contact' page of the application. Basically you add a user, the session.vcompany_id is placed in the company_id field of the new record. This identifies the users company. Then due to a company having numerous sites, i wish to then select which site from a field called 'site' which refers to a seperate table called 'sites' which also contacts the company_id field.

        Variables in filters

        Since the session variable is numeric, it has to be converted to character for the filter expression. This is frequently a very difficult concept to understand since you are creating an expression to compare a numeric value to another numeric value. While the values are numeric, the actual expression is a character string and therefore text. You should also verify the session variable exists before applying the filter. Assuming company_id is a numeric field, the filter expression for the table should probably be
        Code:
        DBF.filter = "company_id = " + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))
        You can test this in the interactive window to verify the result
        Code:
        dim session as p
        dim session.vcompany_id as n
        session.vcompany_id = 10001
        DBF.filter = "company_id = " + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))
        ?DBF.filter
        = "company_id = 10001"
        However, filtering on numeric values sometimes has issues, and it is better to filter on character values.
        Code:
        DBF.filter = "alltrim(str(company_id)) = \"" + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))+"\""

        ?DBF.filter
        = alltrim(str(company_id)) = "10001"
        Since you are using the same filter for both the table and the dropdown, you really don't have to duplicate the code
        Code:
        filter = "alltrim(str(company_id)) = \"" + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))+"\""
        DBF.filter = filter
        	field_info[16].DropDownBox.Filter = filter
        Add in a test for the existence of the session variable, and you have
        Code:
        filter = ""
        if eval_valid("session.vcompany_id") = .T.
        	filter = "alltrim(str(company_id)) = \"" + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))+"\""
        end if
        if filter <> ""
        	DBF.filter = filter
        end if
        if filter <>""
        	field_info[16].DropDownBox.Filter = filter
        end if

          Jerry,

          Thank you for your detailed response.

          I have added your code to the a5w page, but the filter does not seem to be filtering the dropdown.

          Code:
          'Each component on a page must have a unique alias (componentName property).
          with tmpl_addcontact
          	componentName = "addcontact"
          filter = ""
          if eval_valid("session.vcompany_id") = .T.
          	filter = "alltrim(str(company_id)) = \"" + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))+"\""
          end if
          if filter <> ""
          	DBF.filter = filter
          end if
          if filter <>""
          	field_info[16].DropDownBox.Filter = filter
          end if
          end with
          '=======================================compute the HTML for the Component=========================
          When i test the session variable (? session.vcompany_id) i get still get 10001.000000

          What have i done wrong?

          Thanks in advance.

            The first question is how is the dropdown defined in the grid builder? The second question is why do you think the filter is not working? The filter appears correct, and the variable value appears correct, so the dropdown should filter, assuming the filter expression will actually limit the records shown.

            The only part I would change is to move
            Code:
            if eval_valid("session.vcompany_id") = .T.
            	filter = "alltrim(str(company_id)) = \"" + alltrim(str(session.vcompany_id))+"\""
            end if
            outside of the "with" construction. Either that or dim "filter" before running the "with". Otherwise the variable actually being defined is tmpl_addcontact.filter. That shouldn't impact anything, but isn't the best practice.

              Hi Jerry,

              I have attached a screen shot of the dropdown box definition in the gridbuilder.

              I am really not sure why the dropdown is not filtering.
