Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculation help

I need some help with calculations in a table.

This is my table, its used to calculated miles per gallon for my boss.

The table is set up like this:

Odometer,Gallons, and MPG (miles per gallon)

Now I want to be able to calculate the mpg and I thought I had it working. At least it worked intially, now it spits out odd numbers and negative numbers. In the field rules I made the MPG a calculated field and then used this for calculating the mpg (I found it on the boards, and like i mentioned it worked at the beginning but not it is not.)

    (ODOMETER-PREVIOUS("Odometer"))/GALLONS

I have looked at the help file but all it did was confuse me. Am i missing anything ( I am sure I am because it shows on the expression builder that it is an invalid or incomplete expression.)

If anyone could help me I would appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Dale

Your expression works fine when I create a table to your specifications. One thiing I will note is that previous() decides which record is the previous record based on the current index order so if you have changed the order you have changed the effecitve record for calculation.
    There can be only one.

Would having multiple vehicles all in the same table be causing a problem too

Because I have like 6 vehicles. The vehicles are a seperate table and I have made a set with the vehicles and mpg table. I used the Vehicle number as the linking field for the 2 tables.

I'd have to see a sample but the previous() function doesn't know about anything other than what record comes before the current record. The previous record in your case could well be a different vehicle.

OKay that is what I was afraid of, might have to make seperate tables for each vehicle, any other possible way to have all the vehicles on one table and have it figure mileage for each, i am outta ideas, other than seperate tables.

            Thanks

Create an index on the vehicle field, say veh. Then change the expression to

              (ODOMETER-PREVIOUS("Odometer","veh"))/GALLONS

Thanks for the help Stan but I think I have worked around it.

I was not really all that interested in having the MPG as a column in my table, was just the way I was looking at it, but I read some of the help files and discovered that I could have a REPORT, which is what this would ultimately be used as, have the calculations in it as opposed to in my table, thus my calculation would work, it appeares because I set filters on it, to ask for the unit #, start and end dates, so it appears it would work okay, since it looks at the previous mileage based upon that vehicle I asked for.

Seems to work will have to mess with it some more but i hope that did it.

                      Thanks again for the help
