Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    User Licenses exceeded

I'm getting this error when I try to run A5 on a workstation. I have one 5-user runtime license and one 3-user runtime license. When I look at this person's computer, I see they're BOTH installed here (I have no idea how I managed that) and it won't let me uninstall the 5-user license. It still doesn't make sense though, because I only have three other people using the 5-user license right now. I should be able to have 8 on at the same time, plus me with my single full version, right? And when I load A5 on the other computer that has the 3-user license installed, I get the same error.

Also, the program is slow loading up, so I noticed impatient people loading it two and three times because they click, click, click. I thought that could have been my problem, but I've double checked and it's not.

    Any ideas?

    Linda

If you own a 3 user runtime and a 5 user runtime, you do not have an 8 user runtime.

You can't upgrade a 5 user runtime to more users by buying a 3 user runtime.

The only way to get more users for a 5 user runtime is to upgrade to a 10 user runtime.

In other words, there is no way to add more users to an existing runtime. You have to upgrade to the next level.

If you contact customer service they will figure out the lowest cost option for you to get to the next level user count.

If people's computers crash using Alpha Five, or if they do not shut down Alpha Five at the end of the day but just turn their computers off, then sometimes the server, particularly a Windows server, thinks they are still connected. You can fix this by deleting the .MUF files on the server -- they are the way Alpha Five keeps track of how many users are on the database.
You should be able to have 6 users on the system, one for the the full development license and the 5 on the runtime.

You know, I specifically asked the sales rep that question. I started off with the 5 user runtime, and told him I needed to add a couple more users to the system. He was the one that suggested I get the 3 user runtime too. He knew exactly what I wanted to do. Am I now stuck with a 3 user runtime that I can't use? Let me add, I paid another $250 for those extra 3 licenses that I don't really seem to have.

As Selwyn suggested, contact customer service. They will work with you to get you what you need.

Customer service will give you a credit on your 3 user r/t purchase toward an upgrade of your 5 user r/t to a 10 user r/t.

Selwyn - thanks for your response. I would have never figured that out. I spoke to customer service this morning, and it's been taken care of. Everyone should be up and running by the end of the day.

                And this is why...

And this is why I love Alpha and continue to support and use them for my applications. The service is unparalleled! I use Filemaker, VB, and Alpha. You cannot do a better job and thanks Selwyn for being here!
