Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5V6 and WinVista

Has anyone had any success running A5V6 in Windows Vista? I installed Vist build 5384 and then A5V6. On initial startup none of the kernel print drivers in A5 would load. I patched it to the latest version and now am getting an unhandled exception error. Haven't yet tried A5V7.

We have not tested V6 with Vista and do not intend to. However the print driver issue is not surprising, as V6 uses a kernel-mode driver. There is a workaround available if you search for this issue and Windows 2003 here.

V7 uses a user-mode driver for this reason. However the V7 driver still has some issues on 64-bit Windows. This will not be addressed until v8.

      WinVista Issue

Thanks Lenny, that's sorta what I thought when I saw the errors were kernel level issues. Guess the customer will have to move up to A5V7.

Please tell us you are not using Windows Vista on a production machine - it's a BETA OS

You're on your own there Martin. V5 was released well before Vista was even a thought in the mind of Microsoft. If they've changed OS-level behavior between then and Vista, you won't be able to do much about it. I'm not saying it won't run - we haven't tested it and will not be doing so - but I would not be surprised to hear of problems.

So are we all still on our own with Win Vista? I can use the program with V. 6, but I can't save or send any reports. Must one still upgrade to V. 8? Will that work? Will it always be such that you have to spend megabucks to upgrade when Windows changes?

If windows changes such that things that were once done no longer work, the developers are going to have to rewrite the application, and they are not going to do that for free.
                  There can be only one.

do you have it installed in program files? if so, try installing it in the root directory - you will have to install both alpha and the application in folders outside of program files.

                      Re: A5V6 and WinVista

I have been running v7 on vista since it first came out. Telling me it won't run there always makes me try harder.

I have found only one program that will not run in vista so far.

As Martin said, Put everything in a folder off the root directory. It will work. At least, I have had no issues that way.

When windows 98 came out, it was a problem also. MS fixed that one, but seems with Vista, they haven't.

                        Re: A5V6 and WinVista

This was the useful response, and I appreciate it very much. I already had v7, which had caused me some problems before and I dropped it. Putting v. 6 on the root directory didn't solve the problems, but v7 has run well, and, knock on wood, it hasn't repeated whatever errors it used to. Thanks a lot.

                        Sincerely,
                        Ed
