24 Hour Time calcuations

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to figue out a time calcuation problem:

I have the following Fields:

Dispach Time: This needs to be in Military time: Ie 23:30

Enroute Time: This also needs to be in Military time: 23:45

I am trying to figure out how to do time calcuations in 24 hour format.

For example: Enroute time: 23:45 - Dispatch time: 23:30 = 15 minutes.

Enroute = "23:45"
? toseconds(dispach)
= 84600.000000

? toseconds(enroute)
= 85500.000000

? toseconds(enroute)-toseconds(dispach)
= 900.000000

? totime(toseconds(enroute)-toseconds(dispach),1,2)
= "0:15"

This will not work if enroute carries over to the next day. You will have to incorporate separate math for that.

You'll have to account for the date change.

Toseconds converts a Formatted_Time containing a time value to an integer Count equal to the number of seconds past midnight. Your table/data will have to record the date of the dispach and enroute and calculate whether the date changed in between and if it did, calculate dispatch to midnight time and midnight to enroute time.

If you are using the now() function to populate your time fields the following will work very well. To demo, create a new table with the following fields: start_time and end_time both with a type of Time, and a third field named elapsed_time with a type of N (numeric) of whatever size and decimal places you need.

In field rules set elapsed_time to be a calculated field with the expression being (end_time - start_time)/3600 , 3600 because that's the number of seconds in an hour. Enter some sample data in the default browse in the format mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm with the hours being military time hours. Your elapsed_time field should correctly calculate the hours elapsed. In you app you don't necessarily need to do the calc as a field rule, it can be a field on a form or whatever. This will work even if you go past midnite.

I've used the now() function on a button on a time clock app to record clock in and clock out times with the hours worked being calculated as above.
