Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    n=0
    t.fetch_first()
    while .not. t.fetch_eof()
    n=iif(left(t.lastname,1)="M",n+1,n)
    t.fetch_next()
    end while
    ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block

    Dave
    I may be mistaken Dave, but I think it would work with a simple reversal of t.fetch_first() and while .not.......lines
    If that doesn't work, try changing the while .not. to a simple While .not. t.eof()
    My two cents worth :)

      James,
      You left out the trailing right parenthesis in the line:
      ownerlist=table.external_record_content_get("[PathAlias.adb_path]\calendar_owner",\ "owner","owner","active=.t." )

      And Jerry -- the point about queries being faster is made in the book, on the same page as the code fragment showing how it would be coded if queries were not available.

        Extra 'i'

        Dave,
        I don't know if this is a typo, but there is an extra "i" in your "iif", line 5.

        Mike W

        Dave's code than didn't work:
        t=table.open("customer")
        n=0
        t.fetch_first()
        while .not. t.fetch_eof()
        n=iif(left(t.lastname,1)="M",n+1,n)
        t.fetch_next()
        end while
        ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block
        Jerry's code that did work:
        dim t as p
        dim n as n
        t=table.open("customer")
        n=0
        t.fetch_first()
        while .not. t.fetch_eof()
        n=if(left(t.lastname,1)="M",n+1,n)
        t.fetch_next()
        end while

        t.close()
        ui_msg_box("",str(n))

          Interesting about the IIF(). If you check the Help files, it looks to me like IIF() should work in this case but it seems to be confusing the compiler into thinking it's an IF statement. A possible bug?

          (I don't believe I've ever used the IIF() command so I'm no expert - just reading the Help file.)

          Edit: According to the A5v1 Help file...

          "The IIF function is the same as the IF function. Use IIF instead of IF when using the function in an Xbasic script."

          I've never used IIF in an xbasic script that I know of but I've used IF() many times. I guess this situation only applied to v1.

            If (no pun intended) my memory serves me correctly, the (older) iif is a carryover from dBase days, but it functions exactly the same as the (newer) if.

              Peter,

              On the example aged receivables report, could you help me understand why the Cust_ninety calculation is equal to Ninety, rather than total(Ninety,GRP->Customer)? I've been known to be math challanged, but this looks wrong.

              Also, I think the 'Grand_' fields should be:

              Grand_Thirty=Total(Thirty)
              Grand_Sixty=Total(Sixty)
              Grand_Ninety=Total(Ninety)

                Dr. Wayne,

                I added the parenthesis and it still gives the same response

                  Dave,
                  The "cust_ninety" field in the aged receivables report is a summary field and it is in the "customer" group footer. It is equal to the group total as you describe; it is not supposed to be equal to "ninety". I'm sorry if I did not make that clear enough.

                    Jim,
                    I don't know why you're getting the 500 Server error. Check to be sure that you have [PathAlias.adb_path] defined, that the "calendar_owner.dbf" table is where it belongs, that the table has a character field called "owner" and a logical field named "active".
                    Were you able to get alpha's web components to work in chapter 46?

                      Bottom of page 80 (Chap 21) references a script named 'aged_receivables'. However, in the .zip file it is named 'aged_invoices.'

                      Page 91, code segment, first DIM statement should not be commented out.

                        Thanks, Dave. Of course, in the script on p. 91, it doesn't really matter that the line
                        DIM SHARED lastname as c
                        was commented out; if it's commented out, then lastname is a local variable instead of a shared variable. For this script, it doesn't matter.
