Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filtering drop-down from prior selection

I've created a web component that has multiple drop-down fields. Is it possible to populate (filter) another drop-down field with information based on the previous drop-down fields selection?

Example: The first drop-down field contains selections from a db that are car manufactures (Ford, Chevy, etc). When the user makes a selection (say, Ford) an additional field in the same db associated with each (manu=F) is also available.

Based on the user selection from the manufacture drop-down, is it possible to populate the next drop-down (Model), which also is a db with the same field (manu) available associated with the proper manufacture code (in this case, "F") with a filter that only includes those models?

I'm lost here (still a newby at A5) and would appreciate any help

    TIA!

    Eric,

I think there is an example in the web samples that shows how to do this.

I use this in a dialog component...I don't know if it works in a grid component. Basically, in the filter for the second dropdown box, Model, you place the variable that results from the first dropdown, say vManufacturer. So, for example, the filter is

    vModel=?

and map ? to a character variable vManufacturer.

      Pat,

Thanks for the information and tip. I'll do a search and see what I can find.

        Further on this;
I was unsuccessful in acomplishing this routine in a grid component but was successful in a dialog component.

        Thanks again.

The grid component does not support this type of behavior; only the dialog does.

So that's why something similar did not work for me also...

This is a feature which should be included in the components also I think.

I hope this will work its way up on Alpha's priority list soon.

This is a similar feature like the treecontrol I'm still very much missing in the WAS...
Selecting entries under a certain branch...The WAS system would boost functionality wise once included...

Because of the grid component being unable to update another field from a field that has a drop-down selection has made it necessary to use dialog components for this feature.

This, however, has lead me to another problem: trying to figure out how to link a record from a grid component to a dialog component. I have tried both the syntax from the help file and the simple syntax offered in the link properties but both return the first record no matter which is selected.

I'll start a new thread on this issue with more detail in case someone else is having a similar problem.

Is there not a workaround using code for this type of functionality?

One answer to your question is "Yes", but only if you wait until Version 8.

When do you expect version 8 to be released Edward?

Also, I have never seemed to get my head around dialog pages, however. I have a ADD ASSET form in a grid at the moment. It looks like i will need to convert that grid to a dialog. I need that new dialog to allow me to add a new record to an existing table.

Im sure this is easy peasy, but i have never use that function in A5. What is the best way to go about achiveving this including cascading dropdowns in the page also??

                    Thanks in advance.

The announced goal at the user conference was sometime this summer.

                        Hi Edward,

I now have version 8 and wish to filter the dropdown in the same way as in a dialog i.e. CPU=?. I have tried the usual dialog method but the second dropdown box is not filtering.

Is this now expected to work in v8?

                        Thanks

I am also in the same boat here where the I need to update a grid dropdown selection based on a previous dropdown.

Eagerly anticipating a response to Denis's question.
