Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2-Line Embedded Browse Object

Take a look at the attached GIF from the Alpha2Go website. It seems that the Browse Object shows rows with 2 lines. Is this possible? I used this feature in Access but have not been able to duplicate in Alpha. Maybe I'm missing something.

Hello, Jeff! You are missing something, but maybe not in the way you expect. If you'll look at the title bar, you'll notice that the form is running in DataEase, not Alpha Five.

I wonder what (else) Steve Woods sees in DataEase?

Well, well -- DataEase does have a nifty and flexible multi-row browse; that's what you are seeing in the image. I presented it to Alpha developers a year ago as an example. But I abandoned DE for all new development in 2004 (when I attended my first Alpha conference). I still have several clients in DOS and Windows that I maintain. I have one major application built in DE and sold commercially (www.smartpremise.com). But I am rewriting it in Alpha. DE just came out with version 7. I evaluated it, and it has nothing worth looking at - but that is said from my new Alpha perspective; if I was still using DE, I would upgrade. No one uses their web features (at least the forum discussion on the web feature has minimal activity). They took the route of taking a DE Windows page and converting it to a HTML page. Then you get to design a top and side bar (frames) and the DE page goes in the middle. It creates BACK, FORWARD, SAVE buttons, etc. Data travels to and from the database using xml. DE's scripting is weak; at least it never worked in v6. Their equivalent to xbasic, called DQL is much more limited, but actually much easier to master, especially in the area of exports, fetches, matching records, etc. When I evaluated v7 it GPF'd (stopped working) while running several of the demo apps that come with it. I think this is a known problem with their "multibox" or lookup. But GPF's were a common thing with DE. I STILL behave in Alpha as though I am using DE, I save every 10 minutes, cringe when I do something requiring heavy processing, and never press the END key (DE DOS problem, hangs the PC). Except for their American team, I have nothing nice to say about their management -- and the missing specifics of that statement are why I went looking for an alternative. Since then, I have enjoyed all aspects of my relationship with Alpha -- the software, the development team and the management.

Anything else you want to know?

I'm sure this is part of what we are all waiting for in the 'next_generation' super browse, I' hoping for multicolumn as well (if I have three fields in the browse these are repeated across the browse with a horizontal with a bottom scroll bar) This allows you to use the screen capcility to it's best.

See attached screen shot from 'datapower' that allows this.

Nnnnope! I just learned more about DataEase than I needed to know, Steve. Thanks for that disturbingly comprehensive reply!

Side comment: It seems a little odd that DataEase should have such a "nifty and flexible" browse while Alpha Five with all its advantages has that much-reviled browse. Even at my level I'm running into its limitations. Why do you think it's taking so long to revamp?

I enjoyed your reply very much, actually. It's the kind of gung-ho message that encourages me to persevere with learning Alpha Five.

We would all like to know y it's takeing so long to revamp, it seems this has been talked about for a least three years and their has been no update from Alpha Software that I am aware of.
