Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Older runtime

I have a5 V3,5,6 & 7. I have the 3 user runtime for V5. I'd like to know if it's possible to create an app in V7 and compile and distribute with the v5 runtime. If one didn't use any of the functions new to V7 (and there aren't any that I'd need) and only used V5 compatible code, could it be done? I can't bear the thought of spending the $ for the V7 runtime when the V7 upgrade was nothing more that a web application upgrade with a patch or two for the desktop.

    Terry,

You mentioned that you have the V5 full version, why not just create your applications in that when you need to distribute runtimes?

I thoought that the user interface along with the "code intllisence" among othe gui features may be better in V7. I haven't used v7 enough to really tell, but V5 did the trick for me. I know there's been a lot of V7 bashing in the forums (I'm guilty) and I'm trying to keep mine in check. Although I just did purchase V7, I wonder if there's a money-back guarantee even though they have the 30 day trial. There's no point in keeping it if I'm going to use V5.

        Terry,

Even if the gui features etc are better in V7, if you create the app using those features, they will not work in V5. Perhaps you should have used the 30 day trial on V7 before purchasing it, of course it is too late to go backwards. Something else to consider when upgrading versions vs using older versions ... the older versions will not get any further patches, etc ... It all boils down to what your needs are. If V5 works as you need it to for your clients end results, then go for it. If a client needs any of the additional features offered in the versions after V5, then, by all means, it is worth the price of upgrading if you want to be able to offer your clients the additional features.

Most of the work I do as a developer, my clients have the full versions of Alpha and are allowed to make modifications to their own applications when I have finished creating it for them. For me, if I want to stay in business, I purchase all upgrades ...

        Good luck

          Terry,

I have done what you are asking in both runtime V5 and V6, and provided you dont use any features that are higher than the runtime version sent to they work. I have also found that the really nice property sheets from V7 retrograde to V6, list views don't though.
