Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report question.

Stan you should be able to answer this instantly. :)

Here is what i am trying to do for 2 days now. I am trying to make a report that has names of clients and names of months along the top. Now i have sorted each record for each month: for example may is month 5 june is month 6 and so on. Now i want to have my headers across the top as month 1 month 2 and so on. Is there an expression that i can use to just have month 1 and a certain client in a calculated field. I am putting a picture of what i mean.

You need to crosstab your table as indicated in the first attachment. Then you can easily report on the result table, shown in second attachment.

The crosstab will overwrite the result table (and the report you create) each time it is run so you might want to create a copy of the result table, define the report for the copy, then empty and append to the copy from the result table each time you want the report.

Note the use of month01 instead of month1. This makes the columns month01->month12 rather than month1-month10-month11-month12-month2-etc.
    There can be only one.

I'd have to have a question to amswer since I don't know what confuses you.

You're going to have to explain things for me more clearly than "total each month say month 3 up".

                Does this mean?

                month 1 + month 2+ month 3

                or

                month 3 for all records?

Once you have the crosstab result table and design your report you can create a report total for each month field which will yield its grand total. If you want a year to date total for the months so far, like month 1 + month 2+ month 3, you would need to create a report calculated field with the expression month 1 + month 2+ month 3, drop that calculated field into the report footer and specify total. Alpha will generate the expression for you.

If this isn't near what you want, create a spreadsheet resembling what you want with column headers resembling the result table, stick in some data and manually create the totals you want to see. Attach that here so we can see what you want.

If your report doesn't have a report footer, change the properties so that it does, from the drag drop list, select month 1, drag-drop it into the report footer and you will be prompted, specify total. Repeat for the other months

I staggered the fields in the report footer so you could see the whole of their names. Alpha generates this type of calculated field wide enough to show the name, even if the data which will be displayed doesn't fill the area.

For some reason in your drag-drop list you have selected "Field Titles only" (Right above Layout name in the big list area.).

                          Change this to "Fields".

                            easy one...

That report looks great. I just have one more question. I need a total field at the end of month 12 to add all the months up. Like a year to date column. I will call it total but dont know what the function will be. I was thinking on the lines of:
Total_months = total(month_1+month_2+month_3...etc to month_12) Will that work. Im not sure how to total them all because they are all there own calculated field?

Why not just create a calculated field of the fields shown in the detail section

                              ttl_for_acct = month_1+month_2+month_3...etc to month_12

then go back to the report and drop that calculated field into the report footer. Let Alpha do the work for you. BTW the calculated field ttl_for_acct doesn't have to appear in the detail section if you don't want it to. It will still total in the footer.
