Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

obj() problem in a function caused by xp sp2?

    I'll try that cheryl but I am beginning to suspect the problem is in A5V7 running under XP home. Since the function doesn't complete, fname should have a value. When I go to interactive, I can't get a value for fname so it appears that the form name is not being passed from the autoexec to the function.

    One of 3 things has happened.

    1. My coding is incorrect. I don't think that is the problem since it works everywhere but in XP home sp2 since I created it in A5V4.

    2. Something in XP home is creating the problem.

    3. Something in my laptop is causing the problem.

    Since most, if not all of us developing apps are running XP pro, I am hoping someone might have XP home running and try it on their machine to see if the code breaks there. If it does, then it is option 2, and if it doesn't, it is option 3. I just need to know where to look and if it is option 2, then it is a bug and needs to be reported.

    This function was designed to center any form on the screen. I made it general purpose so that it will work with any form and I can use it on a button to open a different form. I normally hide the current form when a new form is opened so I have the if is_object to restore it if they want to go back to a form already loaded.

    Since this function is one of the crucial pieces of my app, it must work in all situations and it isn't. Further development of this or another function will allow a second copy of a form to be opened if the user determines it is necessary.
    My two cents worth :)

      Oran,

      It is very possible that the code is incorrect as there have been many changes in the various versions. In the past there has been code that would work that no longer works in current versions due to older versions accepting bad coding.

      When I go to interactive, I can't get a value for fname so it appears that the form name is not being passed from the autoexec to the function.
      Perhaps my suggestion of changing your form name from main menu to main_menu will solve that particular issue. There have been times where the space in form names work and other times when they do not. I understand in older versions the space was never an issue.

        I had no trouble getting a centerform() function to work on XP Home.
        If you get the error,
        Code:
        f=form.load(fname)
        object cannot support requested interface
        it usually means that you have misspelled the form name, or perhaps the Main Menu form is not part of the database, or the data dictionary to which it belongs is corrupted. Have you compacted your database lately?
        Incidentally, the "centerform" function that works for me is
        Code:
        function Centerform as L(fname as C)
        dim hscreen as n
        dim wscreen as n
        dim height as n
        dim width as n
        wscreen=ui_info(0)
        hscreen=ui_info(1)
        f=obj(fname)
        if is_object(f) then
        	f.restore()
        else
        	f=form.load(fname)
        end if
        width=f.width
        height=f.height
        f.top=iif(height<hscreen,(hscreen-height)/2,0)
        f.left=iif(width<wscreen,(wscreen-width)/2,0)
        f.show()
        f.activate()
        centerform=.t.
        end function
        What happens if you type
        centerform("Main Menu")
        in the Interactive Window?

          Apologies to All

          My humblest apologies to all who have tried to help me. I am embarrassed to admit that when I copied everything, I failed to insure it was complete. The form that autoexec calls using the centerform function does not exist in the copied database.

          Dr. Wayne, my centerform function is identical to yours, I believe I got it off your website sometime in the past.

          Again, my red faced apologies to all that tried to help and I wasn't smart enough to look and make sure all parts were there in order for the function to work correctly.
          My two cents worth :)
