Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email "broke" with build 3031

When I installed version 3031 my e-mails would no longer send. Everything worked fine up to the point of actually sending it. At that point, nothing happened for about 30 seconds then my e-mail program would ask me to enter a new password (not "enter your password" but "enter a NEW password") - which I chose not to do - and A5 locked up. The only way to get it back was to click the red "X" to shut it down.

I tried entering my regular password but after about 5 tries I gave up on that.

I'm using Netscape as my e-mail client and everything works fine now that I've changed back to build 3030.

    Hi Cal,

Does it work with the A5 built-in client? I just tried this and successfully sent an email to myself.

I cannot test the default client for you as mine has never worked with A5 possibly because I adopted it in part because it is dumb as a fencepost.

I should have mentioned that I was using the A5 client. I seldom use my 'external' e-mail client from A5.

It may have something to do with Netscape's mail system because Netscape kept asking me to enter a new password. This may force me into switching to Outlook but I hope not.

If this can't be made to work anymore, anybody have any recommendations for alternative e-mail programs? (And, no, things like Hotmail or Gmail are not acceptable. I'm looking for something that runs/stores the e-mail on my own computer. Like Outlook but not Outlook.)

        Hi Cal,

You will probably get a lot of suggestions. Here is mine. I have been using Calypso for the last five years.

It is now handled by Royce Software. For more information go to

          Hi again (and hello Dan),

As Dan says you'll get lots of suggestions but for the record I use Express Plus in part because it integrates with Time and Chaos, the contact manager but mostly for its security.

You can screen message headers while they are still on the server and delete the bad ones before they get near your own machine. Also, if you have multiple machines you can download mail to one of them without deleting from the server thus making it easy to download them to a second local machine, perhaps in another office.

          Suits my needs.

            Hi Cal,

            I use Mozilla Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

If this is for you personally, then why not just stick with build 3030 if it works there and you are more comfortable with what you are used to, ie Netscape? Perhaps one of the future builds will resolve your Netscape issues.

Cheryl, are you sure Mozilla Thunderbird works? Netscape uses Mozilla and I have the Mozilla browser installed. However, when I go into Mozilla and start my e-mail, it just shows the exact same thing as my "Netscape" mail.

If they are this tightly integrated, Mozilla Thunderbird may not work either if you try to use A5's internal e-mail with the latest update.

Cal, I guess I do not really understand what the problem is. Are you saying that your Thunderbird stopped working when you started using the A5 built in email client?

No. The email_send(), email_client(), and anything that uses A5's internal e-mail quit working. I just happen to be using Netscape Mail which is actually Mozilla - and Thunderbird is also Mozilla so there is a possible link there.

The somewhat wierd thing is that, even though I'm using the A5 e-mail client, my Netscape eventually comes up and asks me to enter a NEW password.

Personally, I think this is directly connected to the latest change in A5. From the release notes:
Email_Send() and Email_Send2() Functions - Were not honoring the "Log on to incoming mail server before sending" SMTP authentication method. The functions will now log onto your POP server before sending mail.
That "log on to incoming mail server" sure sounds suspicious.

I agree Cal, how the hell are you gonna send when logged into the receive?
                    My two cents worth :)
