Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    3 user or 3 runtime

What are the disadvantages of distributing an app with the runtime rather than requiring each user to have a desktop version? I wouln't want the user to see anything in design and would hope to cover enough queries that ad-hoc wouldn't be a major issue?

    From the Alpha Website...

Alpha Runtime products... prevent your application from being modified (and damaged) by your end users. And they let you distribute your application(s) without paying additional license fees to Alpha Software.

Alpha sells two variations called Runtime and Runtime +. Runtime + allows your customers to edit and create new reports, mailing labels and form letters. Besides that, the two variations are the same.

Now, that being said; the only disadvantage of using the Runtimes would be that you couldn't make changes to their live system in their office unless you connected your laptop (with the full Alpha version on it) to their network (which in most cases shouldn't be a factor at all).

The worst thing that happened to me was a Runtime customer who had a problem printing a form letter to a Dell laser printer. Since I didn't bring my laptop with me (Murphy's Law) and they did not allow remote access, I had to make a 4 hour round-trip to get my laptop, then spend another hour tweaking the letter until it printed properly. And yes, Runtime + would have made things a lot easier.

Through the years of watching the forum, I have seen this question in various forms. Many of the early replies were "require the customer to purchase one full version and install it on their server. Next install the runtime of your app on their server with everything password protected so if someone does get into Alpha, they can't make changes." Theoretically, only you and the sysadmin should know about the full version but it will allow you to work on your app at the clients site." One benefit I have seen in some of the posts is being able to work out the issue/problem at home, and if necessary, talk the sysadmin throught the corrections if you can't remotely connect or send a file like .DDD

Not having been that avid a watcher in the last couple of years, I am not sure if this is still the majority opinion.
      My two cents worth :)

        Terry,

A lot depends on the app you are distributing, who you are distributing it to, and what the purpose is.

When I am customizing a db for a client to meet their specific needs, I require they own a full development version of Alpha. They own and have full access to the code. It is the owners decision at that point who has access to the full version of alpha. I use the runtime, 3-5-10-20-etc on work stations to run the app since it is not necessary to have the full version to run the app. The runtime license is also purchased by the client.

If, however, I am creating a generic app that I plan on distributing to multiple different people, I own the code and am the only one to have full access to it. In this instance I compile my scripts/functions into an .aex file and distribute the app complete with the runtime software and license.

In this instance, I am the only one that has access to the code on my machine. If for any reason changes need to be made to the code I have to make the changes on my end and distribute an update to the current users of that application.
