Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    email_send() cannot receive email in Outlook

    I have created a a5w page, with text and a grid component which customers can fill in their information and hit a submit button. I, of course, would like to receive an email in my Outlook inbox alerting me to the fact that someone has filled out our form.

    Using the email_send() function, my script (which was placed in the AfterUpdateRecords on my grid component) looks like this:
    Code:
    function AfterUpdateRecords as v (Args as P, PageVariables as P)
    with PageVariables
    email_send("[email protected],[email protected]","Contact Us Form","A New Form Has Been Submitted","","","",.F.,"","","")
    end with
    end function
    I receive an email if I publish to the local Webroot, but cannot after publishing it to a web page.

    Can someone look at this script and give me some guidance? (In layman's terms, please!)

    Thank you so much!

    Kimberly

    Kimberly:

    Start with the basics. Do you have an email profile set up on the WAS server?

      Steve,

      I am truly sorry for the delay in responding. I tried for over 2 hours and could not access the forum. I even tried on several different computers, but could not get on. My apologies.

      Yes, I have configured an email profile on the WAS server. As I said, I receive an email when the submit button is hit when it is published locally, but not when it is published to a web page.

      Please let me know what additional information I can give you that would help solve this problem.

      Thanks so much for your time!

      Kimberly

        Kimberly:

        If you go to the server and open the WAS or Alpha 5 can you successfully send a test email? There is a test button under email preferences.

          Kimberly:

          Here is a sample of my emai_send.

          Code:
          send_result = email_send(param_to,param_subject,param_message,param_attachments,param_cc,param_bcc,.f.,message_type,"" ,"default",.f.,.T.)
          There are several logical data type arguments I have set to .f.
          I had some trouble with this intially when I put it together until I had the arguments correctly placed.

            Yes. Both of my profiles have been set up and the test works - I recieve an email in Alpha's inbox, as well as in Outlook.

            Thanks for sticking with me on this!

              So if I understand you correctly, my code should look like this? And within the "AfterUpdateRecords", do I need to keep any of the "function" text - in other words, how should this code look in final format.

              Also - what does "block the code" mean? I know that's a novice question, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can as I go along.... thanks.

              send_result = email_send([email protected],par....,message_type,"" ,"default",.f.,.T.)

                I don't know why, but this message is not the message I wrote....

                I'll try this again.

                Code:
                send_result = email_send([email protected],param_Contact_Us,param_A_new_message_has_been_sent,param_attachments,[email protected],param_bcc,.f.,message_type,"" ,"default",.f.,.T.)

                      You cannot have "@" or "." in variable names, thus "[email protected]" is not a valid variable, nor is "[email protected]".

                        Sorry - How are non-programmers supposed to know this stuff?

                        So, I guess I don't understand how this code should be written.

                        I was hoping that the email_send() code would have worked as I copied and pasted it from another member, which does includes the @ sign. Will that code not work for my situation?

                        Code:
                        with PageVariables
                        email_send("[email protected],[email protected]","Contact Us Form","A New Form Has Been Submitted","","","",.F.,"","","")
                        end with
                        end function
                        Thanks for the information and patience, and continued help! (Hopefully I have blocked the code correctly, but if not, please let me know....)

                          A good start is Peter Wayne's "Xbasic for Everyone" book as well as "Learning Xbasic" at http://support.alphasoftware.com. Here is a topic in the help on legal variable names: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...a_variable.htm. I do not see where anyone posted code with "@" symbols in them except within a quoted string.

                            Ok - so are you saying that you can use "@" as long as it is within quotes, and the code would look something like this?

                            Code:
                            send_result = email_send([EMAIL="[email protected],param_Contact_Us,param_A_new_message_has_been_sent,...etc"]param_"<A href="mailto:[email protected]",param_"Contact_Us",param_"A_new_message_has_been_sent",...etc">[email protected]",param_"Contact_Us",param_"A_new_message_has_been_sent",...etc[/EMAIL].[/LEFT]
                            And, can you help me with either this code or the Email_send() code so that it will successfully send an email when the "submit" button is pushed?

                            I will, I have tried to find the time to devote to learning XBasic.... (I guess I don't have to sleep!) Unfortunately, my present position encompasses most of my time....my first priority is just to get this to work!

                            Your continued help is truly appreciated.

                              A variable name cannot contain any special characters except for _ and . but . has special meaning and won't work in the context you are using it in.

                              You are confusing the concepts of variables, parameters, and constants. You just need to spend some time and learn the basics of Xbasic before starting to write Xbasic.

                              Here is the documentation for email_send():
                              http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...AIL_SEND().htm

                              Here is some example code:
                              Code:
                              DIM to AS C
                              DIM subject AS C
                              DIM body AS C

                              to = "[email protected]"
                              subject = "Contact US"
                              body = "A new message has been sent"

                              email_send(to, subject, body)
                              In the above case, to, subject, and body are variables that have been assigned values. Those variables are then passed to the email_send() function.

                              or, this would work too:
                              Code:
                              email_send("[email protected]", "Contact Us", "A new message has been sent")
                              In this example, the values are passed directly as quoted strings without using variables.
