Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    travel report

I am trying to find some examples of a travel report. I would like to post mileage, tolls, meals, etc. individually and then totals. I tried the search button for travel and expense reports, but no luck. Any suggestions where I might find an example report?

I'm not sure I understand why a travel/expense report would be significantly different from any other report involving details, groups, and totals. The quick report creation genie should get you started if you specify groups and totals rather than the basic tabular style. Embellisments can be added as you desire later.

      Stan:
Thanks for providing some insight. My brain seems to be frozen or something, but I am just not getting it yet. I've been on the road for a while so maybe that explains it. I am trying to replicate an excel type report, where I can list individual meal, toll, gas and misc expenses and then total them up. I don't think I have had enough experience with reports yet to get things to look right.
I am using embedded browse forms within a form for each travel day, to list multiple tolls and meals for a particular day, but I run into problems when I try to show the entries properly in a report.

I will keep working on it. Thanks again for your input.

I assume your embedded browse displays records from the child in a one to many set. On a report you would create a group which breaks on the linking field, put fields from the parent in the group header and footer as appropriate, put fields from the child in the detail section.

Check the discussion of mrecno() for a discussion of set composite records.

Thank you very much for your kind directions. After a few false starts, I am on the right track. I just need more practice in layout design for reports. By the way, is there a way to line up fields so that detail, group and footer all line up properly, especially when using monetary columns? Right now I am using hand and eye coordination. I tried holding down the shift button and clicking on the field in detail and then in group, but I could not get both to highlight.

          Thanks again for your help.

You have to leave everything out of the report or page header until the last step. That allows you to right click in the ruler at the top, a vertical line will appear through all objects below the right click point (selecting them), and a menu will appear allowing alignment options. You can left click in the ruler, get the same line and selection, and drag the selected objects to the right or left.

If your objects have the same size and justification, you can get good results as well by selecting each in turn, edit the properties, dimensions, and specify the left position point.

            Glad you're on your way.
