Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Merge to microsoft word in web application

    Hi,

    I want to display a record and be able to merge to word a letter based on that information.

    I see on the sample application you can send this to PDF but I wanted to merge to word and allow changes prior to printing.

    Is this possible using the web application, I realise it can be done via the normal alphafive database.

    regards

    John

    John,

    I'm not sure I understand your question.
    If you change the extension from PDF to RTF, you get an RTF-file, which can be read in Word.
    Code:
    Dim filename as c
    filename = session.session_folder + chr(92) + "TextFileName.rtf"
    filename = report.saveas("ReportName@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Setname.set","RTF",filter,order,filename,.f.)
    if file.exists(filename)
    	response.redirect(session.session_url + "TextFileName.rtf?" + time("hms3"))
    end if
    end
    Here I used a report, based on a set. So, I do not print the record to rtf, but a report, based on (and filtered on) that record.

    For mail merge, I export letter headers to an xls (Excel) file, which I use in Word.

      John did you ever get this to work? I have a need for the same thing and can't figure out how to make it happen.

        I am working on such a process, but probably taking a different route than you want. I am exporting multiple tab delimited text files to a working directory plus an "instruction" file (contains instructions on what to merge with what). Then the merge execution takes place outside of, and independant of, Alpha WAS.

          I was afraid of that.

          I have a need to merge the mail addresses with form letters. I can get them to open up in Word, but only as an independent letter.

          I didn't think it could be done, not easily anyway, but I thought I'd ask.

          Thanks

            Well I didn't say it couldn't be done, just that I am taking a different path. I have to create documents from multiple clients plus the web, each with a half dozen merge files and a bunch of "sub" files which are preformatted sub documents. In this case I would not want to slow down any data-entry process waiting for the merge to take place. So I plan (haven't done it yet) to use a Folder Watch program looking for instructions on what to merge. In addition to Word, I am using ActiveDocs which compiles the Word document for faster execution and provides a host of merge tools that extend what Word provides (I am used to WordPerfect which, unlike Word, is a REAL document assembly program).
