Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    variables in the POST method

    In the code below, can someone tell me where the following come from:

    FileToUpload.filename
    ServerSetting.Document_Root
    FileToUpload.data

    Are these dot variables available because of the POST method? If so, I can't find any reference material. Where is it defined that .data refers to the data portion of the blob and .filename refers to the text filename?

    Code:

    <html>
    <%a5
    dim msg as c = ""
    if eval_valid("cmd")
        file.from_blob(ServerSetting.Document_Root + "\\" + FileToUpload.filename, FileToUpload.data)
        msg = "<a href=\"/" + FileToUpload.filename + "\" target=\"_blank\">" + FileToUpload.filename + "</a> was uploaded<br /><br />"
    end if
    %>

    <head>
    <title>File Upload example</title>
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="#ffffff">
    <%a5 ? msg %>
    <form action="<%a5 ? request.script_name %>" method="POST" enctype="multipart/form-data">
    <input type="file" name="FileToUpload" value=""><br />
    <input type="submit" name="cmd" value="Upload File">
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>

    Re: variables in the POST method

    The only time "cmd" with evaluate as valid is on a submit. The input type "file" has a number of defined subproperties, such as "filename", and "data". So when the form is submitted, the input object "FileToUpload", which is a "file" type, is submitted and has certain sub properties, such as "FileToUpload.filename" and "FileToUpload.data".

    You assumption is correct, as the filename is the name of the file to upload, and data is the content of the file, which can be blob(image) or text. The action copies the local file to a file with the same name on the folder specified on the server.

    The only reference to this is here

      Re: variables in the POST method

      Ahh, probably why they don't have meaning inside of a dialog AfterValidate event. I am rewriting the procedure to work in a dialog event (almost there). I always thought a blob had to contain binary data and didn't apply to text. The reason I want this in a dialog is to provide related dropdown boxes in the form.

      The line...

      <input type="file" name="FileToUpload" value="">

      ...works fine inside a freeform area to provide a browse button for file selection.

        Re: variables in the POST method

        Jerry, I think I've seen you do this before, how do I alter the html that is standard in the dialog component? I would like to append enctype="multipart/form-data" to this default line:

        <form id="UPLOAD.DIALOG" name="upload" style="margin: 0px;" method="POST" action="">

        making it:

        <form id="UPLOAD.DIALOG" name="upload" style="margin: 0px;" method="POST" action="" enctype="multipart/form-data">

        This, I believe, will allow me to use the dot notation for the blob subparameters within the dialog action.

          Re: variables in the POST method

          Jerry,

          I was able to work through it (referring back to one of your examples from many moons ago). I used stritran to replace text at runtime in the A5W page. Here is the code:

          HTML Code:
          <%a5
          'MY FORM REPLACEMENT CODE
          x_upload.Output.Body.Dialog_HTML = stritran(x_upload.Output.Body.Dialog_HTML,"method=\"post\"","method=\"post\" enctype=\"multipart/form-data\"")
          %>
          I also had to add the following to the freeform area of the upload filename field:

          HTML Code:
          <input type="file" name="FileToUpload" >
          As a result, not only can I upload files, but I can take full advantage of the Dialog component features. In the attached image I have a dropdownbox based on a related table. I could not do that just using the example in the Alpha Help.
