Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How would I do this ?

    Hello all,

Any help on this would be appreciated.

I have made a tabbed grid linker that has 8 linked tables to it.

What I am wanting to do is make it so that when you fill out one of the tabbed forms and push the submit button, it acts as a next button when pushed.

Meaning that it submits the form to my database and then opens the next tabbed form.

I have looked and looked on the boards can't really find anything, have looked in the help file nothing, so if anyone could give me some help on this I would appreciated it.

    Thanks
    Dale

    8 linked tables......hmm that's a bunch alright.

However, there is a submit equals next page option when you create tabbed grid. It's called the Genie. If you don't mind handling the 8 linked table perhaps slightly differently, this might work for you.

      Clint,

Does the Genie Tab feature work with grids built on a View? I've never tried, but that would be great if it did. If not, then this won't work for Dale since normally the tabs feature manage fields from only one table.

          I'm almost certain it would.

I think it is a dialog component. Not sure how you can put a grid into it. Dialogs use variables that require you to code w. xbasic. Never heard of applying a tabbed grid linker to a dialog. Seems like apples & oranges to me.

                Um no.

Use a grid to get the header info, use links to spawn off the 8 other views. Much faster than the grid linker from my experience.

Thanks all of you for your help.

I don't know if I will be able to use this for my large tabbed grid linker, but I found the tab control stuff and was messing around with another aspect of my database which shows people and their information and our contacts with them. This should do the trick for it and make it easier to enter data.

Man I love this place you people are so very helpful and this is one heck of a program. Keep up the good work.

                    THanks again

Re: How would I do this ?

By preferences, I don't use the tabbed grid linker. Its too slow. Instead I use a navigation component and filtered grids on A5W pages to accomplish the same effect.

I just saw that this is my 1001'st post. I need a vacation.

Re: How would I do this ?

                        Steve,

I like that idea of not using tabbed grid linkers, as I have noticed they are slow.

But my problem with it is I can't figure out how I would link these tables otherwise.

Because they are all part of a whole and need to be presented as one.

I can't figure out how I would get my key, which in this case is a Case No, on all of my various portions of the report, without the other people manually entering on each of the different parts.

Hahaha all i did was confuse myself but at least I am thinking about it.

Re: How would I do this ?

Without going into too much detail here now, on one of my applications I have this process (I've worded this to fit your business):
                          • On the menu they click New Case which opens a dialog component to add the Case details.
                          • I write the case to the database AND set a session variable to the case number.
                          • I also have to create one record in related tables with the case number. For example, if you have a Case Comments table, you'd need to post one record to that table. Otherwise the grid would appear with the statement "No records in query".
                          • I then take them to a menu with the REST of the Case related A5W pages.
                          • Each A5W page is filtered to match the case number.
Same thing when reviewing an existing case. I would have an initial dialog that asks the case number. Write that value to a session variable, then show a menu with all of the related A5W pages.

Sorry, I probably just committed you to a week of trial and error!

I will work on it and see what I can come up with.

Dale, I use Steve's approach, so i thought i would speed up your tinkering a bit.

I use a dropdown box in a dialog component to select a job (in your case, case). The variable name of the box is vJob. This lets me filter based on the client, but you might have another way to filter to reduce the number of choices. In the dropdown, I display the job name, but I store the job id. Then in the AfterValidate event, it is simply:

                              Code:

                              Dim session.Job_Id as C
                              session.Job_Id = vJob
If the show all checkbox is checked, then I delete the session variable.

In each of the pages, then add a filter to the with tmpl.... section that says
                              Code:

                              If eval_valid("session.job_id")=.t.
                              DBF.filter= "Job_Id="+s_quote(sesson.job_id)
                              end if
So, if a job has been selected, then only that job appears inthe grid. If no job is selected, then all jobs appear.
