Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Version 8 features?

Does anyone know (or be willing to share) what features are planned for version 8? I've heard wind that there will be more internet goodies, but that's just rumor.

    Re: Version 8 features?

The only features that I know about, are on the web side. That's not to say there won't be desktop stuff, it's just that I don't know much. But at the A5 conference on the web side we were shown:
    • new login component
    • AJAX for components (but not for grids - at least not yet)
    • web "forms" - as verses grids and components
    • web speed improvements
Selwyn did show a new look for the desktop, based upon MS-Office 2007(?), which, although cosmetic, was really cool.

That's about all I know, but I'm really looking forward to it in any case (and I just switched my office to v7)!

Peter, by web forms, do you mean that we can use a desktop form and host that on the web?

No, unfortunately not. That's why I put "forms" in quotes. HTML forces a completely different structure on the web. Nonetheless, Alpha's new web "forms" are really cool. They allow you to much more easily create pages that resemble desktop forms.

Before any rumors really start going, the feature list for v8 is not completely decided yet. When we are ready to announce what's coming, you guys will be the first to know.

              Ray,

The funny thing is, at the conference, they never actually said that any of the features they showed us would be in v8. So, it's kinda like they're hedging their bets. On the other hand, v8 is going to have enough in it to make people bite. If they come out with a version that neglects the desktop, they better bill it as a web-only upgrade or there are going to be a lot of angry users out there. The fact of the matter is, they didn't show us a single new desktop feature at the conference. That doesn't mean there won't be any, of course. But it is kind of strange...

I'm just curious -- does anybody have a guess as to what % of Alpha users use it strictly for Desktop development vs. users who also use the Web stuff?

                  Re: Version 8 features?

Judging from the posts on this forum, its 3 to 1 in favor of desktop. Judging from my conversations at the conference, I'd say the same. But that is based on ACTIVE projects. If you look at total installed applications I could not guess, but would expect it to be well over 50 to one.

This is a reply that was posted on another thread about the subscriptions. So from this reply it would seem version 8 is going to have some goodies for the desktop developers/users as he states it a major upgrade with lots of features for Desktop guys.

                    and I quote

"we will be releasing more information about version 8 and the 3 editions

                    - stay tuned -

I can say that v8 is a feature rich and major upgrade with a lot of emphasis on DESKTOP features as well as web/browser application building features.

When we are ready to release information about version 8, we will release it. Until that point, we cannot confirm or deny whether or not specific features will be in the product.

I agree with you 100% their are many many users/developers that dont care about the web, they only want desktop applications. I feel they are spending many more HRs on the web stuff ver the desktop stuff. Time will tell, by the way how about a mobil ver of Alpha like FileMaker has?

                            Re: Version 8 features?

I finally broke down and purchase V7 desktop after going back to using msAscces. I have A5V6, but had gone back to V5 since is ran better and used fewer resources. My biggest gripe is that V7 offered almost nothing for the desktop application developer and it appears that V8 will do the same thing unless they actually re-write the browse control. Alpha should have released the web version as a totally separate application and left the desktop alone until (or should I say if) enough enhancements are added to justify a major release. The desktop purchase was basically just a dentation of funds to Alpha for the ability to get new patches. Judging by the "special" pricing that never ends, sales of V7 must not be that good in spite of the ad saying that the sale pricing stays in effect because of the great success it has had. Supply and demand shoots that theory down.

This should be in the wish list, but along with the brows, a better way of handling libraries and code grouping would be a wise move also. Also separating the table from the sets in the database window would be nice.

There! I haven't grumbled for a few weeks now so it's out of my system for the time being.
