Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: Version 8 features?

I'm fairly new with alpha, less than a year, but am looking forward to the V8 update... my question for those of you who have been using it for some time: When a new version comes out, do you leap on it to be on the bleeding edge, or do you wait a while? I plan on leaping, but I'd be curious what the past history of updates has taught you folks... thanks.

Alpha should have released the web version as a totally separate application and left the desktop alone until (or should I say if) enough enhancements are added to justify a major release. The desktop purchase was basically just a dentation of funds to Alpha for the ability to get new patches. Judging by the "special" pricing that never ends, sales of V7 must not be that good in spite of the ad saying that the sale pricing stays in effect because of the great success it has had. Supply and demand shoots that theory down.

This should be in the wish list, but along with the brows, a better way of handling libraries and code grouping would be a wise move also. Also separating the table from the sets in the database window would be nice.

There! I haven't grumbled for a few weeks now so it's out of my system for the time being.
        Thontlb,
Was is it that you dont like about the browse as it stands now? anyone that wants to add to this feel free because I am currently communicating with Alpha on this.

Oh come on Ray you cannot be serious, just look at the number of posts on browses.

Do you not have any problems with it? If not why are you talking to alpha about it? If Alpha don't have a problem why did Selwyn ask people not to mention it at the conference?

Maybe you could have a look at my problem at the following.
          http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...8&postcount=54

This is the reason why I am looking at filemaker v8.5 and access 2007 at the moment. Opening and closing the form to refresh the browse is very time consuming, last weekend I worked on a BOQ with 54 pages and a total of 1513 items (lost count of the buildup items) most of my time was spent opening and reclosing the form.

Good questions. That's a double edged sword. In my experience, each new release has lots of bugs, including things that used to work no longer working. So there is strong impetus to wait. But on the other hand, even if I wait I still find certain bugs unique to "me" - in other words, each user may find things that someone else has yet to stumble across. But if you report them, they usually get fixed very quickly. So there is an advantage on being on the cutting edge too.

              Re: Version 8 features?

I tend to get the new version early, work with it awhile, build some new apps and/or modify my own apps BUT not update existing client apps until I feel it's ready.

New customers aren't surprised when a few bugs arise. Existing customers get real upset when something that worked just fine suddenly quits working.

                Re: Version 8 features?

I do the same as Cal and Peter. New versions have more than I can absorb in a short time, so I pick out the things I have been waiting for or seem immediately useful and put them to use in a stock application that I use for testing. Unless I have advance knowledge of a problem, I apply mid-version patches pretty much blind. On new versions I sort of run though my pet peeves to see if they were fixed or enhanced, and then re-report them if not.
