Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Does the record exist when you view the default browse? If so you probably have an order expression set for the form and the record just entered is "sorted" to its proper place.
    There can be only one.

no it in fact disapears. say i am working on record # 186 as the new record. if i hit save and notice the problem and close the form the record count is 185.

        Jeff,

Open the AlphaSports sample database and enter a few records. Does the same problem occur? If so, I'd consider uninstalling and reinstalling Alpha Five. If not, I'd be concerned that possibly my database (or some portion of it) has become corrupted.

Tom thanks I'll try that. This is the first app i have built with a5 and have had a LOT of errors getting it to work as i want it to (probably totaly my fault as I am learning).

If Alphasports runs ok, then maybe you could post a copy of your database here for us to check. You wouldn't need to include all your data. Just enough for us to see the problem. If you do this, please give us instructions to follow to see the problem. -- tom

              Re: records disapearing on "save"

Thanks Tom, Alphasports seems to work fine. here's a zip of "my Movies".
enter data into the my movies form. enter a title. click appropiate fields to define title. enter personal rateing, movie's rating, time length, director via lookup, lead actor via lookup, lead actress via lookup, and supporting cast via button. (on completion of this button when coming back to this form i get a error message. once it shut down alpha, now just shows message and seems to work ok. note not all entries have supporting cast and entries without using this button have disapeared also) last step is to click over to post field so that the "1" appears review entry and hit save button or alpha's save button. if record saves you will see it in the browse if not it just wont be there. at most i have been able to enter 6 records before loseing one. once loseing 1 shutting down the form and restarting it seems to clear problem temporarily.
I thank you for the opertunity. I am very curious as to weather you get the double top as I do.

                Re: records disapearing on "save"

                Jeff,

I'm not seeing the double header on the data entry form.

                I'm running A5v6 build 1600 / 2057.

I think your set linkage is causing your trouble. You've defined a calc field rule in the MY Movies table that sets "link_field" to 1 in each record. This is then used as the link to all your one to many child tables. All your one to many child tables are linked to all your parent table records since the link field value is 1 throughout.

Recommend you make the link_field an auto increment field to give each movie record a unique number.

Thanks for taking a look To. I'm gonna sleep on your advise and see if I can find a way around what i am trying to accomplish with the link, giving it a unique status. Did you have any entries dissapear?. I am seriously considering uninstalling and reinstalling a5.

                  Thanks again

                    Re: records disapearing on "save"

Jeff, I think the disappearing records is a result of the link_field calc rule you have defined in each CHILD table's field rules. When data entry occurs through a set based form, Alpha Five will supply the necessary field value to each link_field. This will happen automatically. But you've defined child table field rules which try to force a specific field value into the same link_field which Alpha Five is trying to write to independently. I think this creates conflict for Alpha. You should remove the calc field rule for the Link_field field in each child table and let Alpha assign the correct link field value in each new record. Set the data entry style to user entered.

The only time you'd want to manually write a specific link field value into a child table is when you're entering records to that table outside of the set. i.e. in a form based only on the child table. As long as you use a set based form the link field value necessary to tie the new child table records to the parent table will be handled by Alpha Five automatically.
