Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    411 Length Required error

    I am getting a
    411 Length Required

error intermitently. Any clue as to why I would be getting this? It seems to be happening during my login and occasionally when I submit a grid. It doesn't happen often, but it is annoying to know that my users are probably getting this too.

I looked it up, and it seems like the web browser is expecting something that the server is not passing on. Can anyone exlpain how to fix this? Am I doing something wrong?

    Re: 411 Length Required error

The server sends back a 411 error if it receives a POST request, but that request does not include a Content-Length header in it.

    From the HTTP 1.1 standard:
For compatibility with HTTP/1.0 applications, HTTP/1.1 requests containing a message-body MUST include a valid Content-Length header field unless the server is known to be HTTP/1.1 compliant. If a request contains a message-body and a Content-Length is not given, the server SHOULD respond with 400 (bad request) if it cannot determine the length of the message, or with 411 (length required) if it wishes to insist on receiving a valid Content-Length.
Because there is no 100% reliable way to determine the length without this header, the server sends the 411.

I suggest turning on raw request logging on your server. Once you receive a 411 response, examine the log to see if the most recent request was in fact a POST and that it was missing the Content-Length header.

If the log confirms this, there is a problem with your browser, a firewall, or something else that is corrupting the request before it reaches your server.

If the log shows a 411 being returned and either of the conditions are not met, please send me the log file.

      Re: 411 Length Required error

Has anyone else seen this and do they have a solution? For some reason all my login pages on my development machine are now coming back with this error. On the production machine this is not happening. I haven't changed any of these pages; I disabled the Windows firewall, reinstalled a5v7 and the latest patch and it still is happening.

        Re: 411 Length Required error

        Peter,

When I had this problem, Lenny sent this message to me. I still get the problem from time to time, but not as often, and not regularly. I believe (but not sure) that my IT guy cleared a few things off my computer. We had had a rash of spyware stuff going on. I do not recall if I ever turned off my firewall to check it, but as that did not help you, it's probably not important here.

        Message from Lenny:

I took a look through the AlphaFiveOnline logs and the only 411 errors have in fact been for POST requests without a Content-Length header. They have all been generated from the IP addresses ... [all at my site]

Since this seems to be happening only with your client, it seems to indicate a problem with your browser, firewall or ISP. Another possibility would be spyware or something else that is messing with HTTP requests sent by your computer.
