Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to move one row at a time in a browse

I would like to have button UP and another DOWN to move the current item up or down in the items of an invoice. In order to re arrange an invoice already create.

Strictly speaking, you can't do what you want. A database is not a spreadsheet. Records are ordered by record number (the default), indices or queries. The problem with doing what you want is that you would need to use some serial value, numeric or character, and index it or query that field. Then using xbasic you would have to "swap" series value between two records, thus achieving the up & down effect. But if you wanted to move a row down three places for example, you would need to read/write all three + one records. It gets a little tricky. It's doable if you know xbasic a little.

I agree with Peter but why not just add a field to hold the invoice line number and have it designed with a simple default expression of some sort and let the user override it if they want to reorder the invoice?
      There can be only one.

        Oscar:
        You could do that by:
a-Initialize an array from the table on which the browse is based.
b-In an array, moving a row up or down is a very simple matter
c-The tricky part comes when you try to print a report from an array. Recently, I was working on such routine, however due to time restrictions, I did not explore every possible means to do that and decided to simply append the array to a new table and print off the new table. Maybe someone else will have better ideas.

If arrays is not your thing, Here is another idea:

First, keep in mind that your browse could be simply based on the record number, but it might be based on an index, it might be sorted Ascending or Descending.., so moving a row up or down has to follow all these pre-defined parameters.

        Let's say you have:
        Row A
        Row B
You want to move Row B above Row A

To bypass these pre-defined parameters, point to the row you want to move (Row B), then on a button that would move the row up write a script that:

1-move the pointer one row up: fetch_previous()
2-Duplicate the row above, now you have:
        Row A
        Row A
        Row B

3-By doing that and on saving the browse, the new row will follow the filter and sort parameters you have in place (theoretically speaking. I did not try this before as I have not encountered this need but it's worth a try)

4-Send the fields' values of of Row B to variables
5-Move up two rows, change the fields' values of the first Row A to the variables' values
6-Go down two rows, delete the original Row B.

Re: How to move one row at a time in a browse

Or... even yet.. a much simpler idea:

When on Row B: send Row B's values to variables
Move up to Row A and send Row A's values to another set of variables
Use the first set of variables (from Row B) to re-populate Row A
Move down and re-populate Row B with the group of Variables.

just for info, the idea behind is to permanently change the proforma-invoice items or a quote. For example we have quoted shirt1, shirt2, pants1, pants2, pants3 then the customer calls and wants to add shirt3, and shirt4, now these items will be below the pants and I will like to have all shirts to be first on the list and all pants to be last.

sorting invoice items on description would sort out this problem

Thanks Gabriel, now I just how to figure how to keep moving the current record up or down as many times as I want to.
Thanks this is getting exciting to be able to do more that just creating a table.

                      Oscar,
In the Form Design Mode, there is the Menu option "Arrange> Set by example". This same action could be written into a button-based script that amends a field of the record for sorting the invoice. It follows along the ideas of what Peter and Stan wrote that you can visualize and see if this might be what you envision.

                        Mike,

That is for arranging the tab order of the form, not the order of the records in a browse

                          Lance,
Yes, I know this. However it is a visual example of how a user generates an order based upon user selection that could be emulated in a script that amends a record field as a strategy to ordering/sorting the records in the invoice.

I started a similar thread over in Ver6 about how to trap the BOF or EOF in the browse. Gabriel's script does do the basic move UNTIL you get to the first or last row of the browse. I am watching this thread to see if you guys can figure it out! Perhaps Peter will come back and give us a hand!
