Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Request Variables and SSI

    In reviewing the request variables associated with the Web Application Server I haven't found any that:

    1. Display the entire URL received by the WAS.
    Request.Headers and Request.raw display only the file name. Nothing to the
    left of the name, i.e. http: or https: or the domain name.

    2. Give a boolean result regarding if the request is secure (https) or normal (http).

    Are there request variables that generate these results? If so, I'd appreciate learning what they are.

    RE SSI (Server Side Include):
    We ran a standard ASP SSI earlier today (<!--#include file="filename.a5w" -->
    ) in the WAS to see if that convention was recognized. It wasn't. Is an SSI available in the Alpha WAS? If so, what is it? If not, are there plans to include one soon?

    Thanks,
    Phil Storre

    Re: Request Variables and SSI

    hi Phil

    you can use the function
    A5W_INCLUDE() on an a5w page to include another page
    see the help file at:
    http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp..._INCLUDE().htm

    you can use the function
    A5_HTTP() to determine the protocol of the page
    see the help files:
    http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp.../A5_HTTP().htm

    and you can use the function
    A5W_INFO() on an a5w page to get the server variables
    see the help files:
    http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...A5W_INFO().htm

      Re: Request Variables and SSI

      As an example, I use:

      a5w_include("help\helpforthispage.htm")

      to bring in a server based text file in to an A5W page.

        Re: Request Variables and SSI

        Thanks for the information.

        The A5W_INCLUDE() works just as described. The other two do not. BUT, I think I know why...

        We having been using the Apache module since early in V6. I think the Apache module is causing what we see here that doesn't fit with what you describe the A5_HTTP() and A5W_INFO() should capture and display.

        For example, on an HTTPS webpage A5_HTTP() displays HTTP:// (because of how Apache intercepts and delivers HTTPS requests I believe).

        And A5W_INFO() displays ONLY the webpage name, no protocol or domain data to the left of the webpage name. Again, I think this is because of Apache's influence.

        With this in mind, AND because Alpha now hosts SSL natively, the question I have is:

        Other than load balancing, is there any reason to continue using Apache rather than changing over to the Alpha SSL routine?

        We have not yet used the load balancing capabilities of Apache. But plan to within the year. If we begin to use Alpha for SSL how would the Apache module be used for load balancing.

        Thanks,
        Phil
