Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

HELP !!! AlphaSports web, I thought this was simple, (lol)

    Hi all,

Can anybody help, with a huge problem.......???

I recently purchased alphasportsweb app thinking that it would be a quick route to posting an ecommerce shop on line, however no such luck.

I have several problems that I just cant seem to get my head around, (maybe its me being thick), below is a list of problems encountered so far.

    1. Is there a way I can duplicate a complete copy of alphasportsweb away from /a5v7/samples into a new directory and rename it into my own Directory and application ie BTCLeisureWebShop.

    2. where does alphasportsweb pick up its field rules etc. ie, when I try to checkout it aks for shipping address, state & postal code, I am UK Based and it wont allow UK counties or post codes, and therefore will not allow me to continue with the checkout.

    3. I am running a registered WAS on my works server. when I veiw app through the laptop I am using to develop I can only veiw it if I publish all files and launch preview when finished, if I try and veiw app on any com on network (including laptop)through IE6 (http://offices/a5webroot/alphasportsweb/index.a5w) it just returns a page error and reports "page cannot be veiwed" .

    4. I have tried to down load help files for WAS several times, into different diretories but whenever I try and open the file, the index loads but the same error occurs on ever help subject "page not available".

can anybody help with my dilemma,, do I try and continue or should I give up..... ??????

Creating a site from scratch with Alpha *is* easier than anything else (that I've tried). However, you're trying to modify someone else's code. This is almost alway tricky at best.

Have considered getting one of the consultants here to jump start you a bit?

I'd help with direct question (if I could) but you're looking for too much assistance to be dealt with in a series of forum postings.

I'd suggest either reading the help and downloading the help file rather than trying to call it from the application (I find that inconsistent).

In the end, getting some help via a consultant will the the fastest and cheapest way to get your problem solved (it was for me).

Post a request to several of the consultants and/or check forum postings for which consultant seems like a good fit for you (I"m not a consultant, I work only for my company).

This isn't the answer you wanted but it may be the answer you needed.

I don't see why not. Try it!

Field rules are in "Field Rules". From the controlpanel, select tables/sets.../design/field rules

But the WAS editor controls validate events, etc.

Clearly you're doing something wrong. When I click on your link I get the Federal Bureau of Investigation's web site!

      You better watch it!

I assume you are referring to Alpha help as verses AlphaSports. You can go the WEB help and view OnLine if nothing else works for you.

If you are note computer literate, I suggest you give up. If you are willing to learn, keep trying. In the latter case, it's better to be specific and ask one simple question at a time and provide exact info on what you are tring to do.

On the help file - you need to go to whatever help file you downloaded, e.g. alphafivehelp.chm, right click on the file and go to Properties. Click Unblock. Blame Microsoft, not Alpha. There is a note to this effect at the place where you download help files.

Just to be sure you know, you can't just copy the AlphaSports files to the webserver, and launch the program in a browser. You have to put the Alpha database in one location, open it with Alpha Five and then Publish the web files to your server. Let us know it that sounds familiar.

When I try your page http://offices/a5webroot/alphasportsweb/index.a5w, I get nothing. That means this location does not point to a running Alpha server. Even if your applicaiton was not running, if the server was running it would return an ALPHA Error, not a generic one.

          Steve,

Even when I click on your copy of the link, I get the FBI. I'm dead serious!

Big Brother is watching - me?

Actually, neither of us were paying attention...

            http://offices/a5webroot/alphasportsweb/index.a5w

...is not even a valid public web address.

"offices" is the name of his server.

And, even inside the LAN, this is not a valid Alpha Server address. You would not have the A5Webroot in the path - that is the virtual server location (usually), and would not be named.

Robert - write back and give us some more information.

              Inspector Wood,

Your latest link still takes me to your FBI web site.

              See attached image.

Works the same for me, Peter. Firefox tells me it's "looking up offices".

OK, I got it. Firefox uses Google "Feeling Lucky?" in the address field like a "keyword URL". Type OFFICES in Google and press Feeling Lucky, you get FBI in the USA, and Tim in Australia gets that tourism site. And Robert, you get FBI too because of that Canada-USA relationship thing we discussed at the Alpha conference!

                      Sorry Guys,

Its me I was getting so angry yesterday with it, the link was not suppose to be a link at all.

The address is to my internal server in my office, (officeS) as yet I haven't published the site to the web, only internally for development and checking purposes.

I have tried it so many times to publish the site to my own directory on my server Data drive D:, without any luck, I scrapped that and just copied exactly the root and path as shown in the help file for Alphasportsweb, of which now works, I can view the site from each of my pc,s on the network.

what I now need to do is try and make a new app into my own directory something like BTCWebShop and rename the app to something more appropriate to us as appose to alphasportsweb.......

apologies to the FBI, didnt mean to upset anyone........
