Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Viewing a web page from a PDA

    Question (for Lenny):

If I just install the latest version of V7, will it include the above patches?

    I'm still running build 3018.

No, the above links are to a pre-release patch. It has not yet been fully regression tested so it is not an official patch. The latest official patch was from 8/14 and it does not include the fix for this problem.

Oh OK. Then I'll install the latest version of V7, then the above patch.

        Thanks Lenny.

          HTML Code:
If you installed the full patch, you can just copy the system.aex and alpha5.aex files from the folder where you installed the full patch to the folder where your server is installed.
I don't quite understand this part. I thought the A5v7 program and the WAS were all installed in the same program folder in the c: drive. (at least normally) So why would the .aex files be located in two different places?

Or is this only referring to times when someone has installed the WAS only software?

Yes, the instructions are for WAS server installation. If you just run a full copy of Alpha as your server, then do a normal installation.

Re: Viewing a web page from a PDA

Lenny what exactly was this patch supposed to do, as we are still having a terrible time accessing our WAS pages on our mobile computers using the Verizon EV-DO wireless modems?

Incidentally, the EV-DO modems give us consistent speeds of 600-800 kbs, and the normal internet pages open extremely fast. The WAS pages on the hand are extremely sporatic. Sometimes they open just fine, but MOST of the time they don't open at all, or at best once you get one to open, the minute you hit the Submit Button or try to navigate between tabbed pages, you get the dreaded "Page Cannot Be Found" message. Other times you get the weird "Zero-Sized Reply/Squid Server" message, which I still don't understand. This goes on over and over until the user gets so frustrated that they just give up.

My agency purchased the WAS for the express purpose of accessing our forms and reports in the vehicle, but so far it's been "hit or miss." I'm really hoping you can figure out what's wrong so we can get this thing working consistantly. (When it works, we love it.)

Incidentally, accessing the same forms on a standard home or office hi-speed internet connection works just fine. No complaints there at all.

Re: Viewing a web page from a PDA

The patch was to fix those types of problems Rich. Brett Bohanon was helpful in testing changes as we made them from his Sprint device.

If you visit http://was.alphasoftware.com and navigate around the sample application there using your Verizon connection, do things work correctly or do you expereince the same problems?

Re: Viewing a web page from a PDA (UPDATE)

                      Okay here's what I found:

When I first tested the application, I encountered the same problems, i.e. Page Not Found, etc. Then I re-installed the patch. (Maybe it didn't take the first time?) Anyway, now it seems to be working GOOD as far as the connections go. No "Page Not Found" messages, no strange style sheets, so far.

On the other hand, after the patch, I've noticed that anytime someone accesses the server via the WAS, the processor usage goes through the roof!

I don't what's causing it, but it wasn't acting that way before. The fix of one problem seems to have caused another. Hopefully the second one will be an easy one to correct.

My users are VERY happy that we got the first problem corrected. Now if we can just find out why it's eating up the processor, it'll be perfect!

As always, thanks Lenny for addressing these problems as they crop up.

Re: Viewing a web page from a PDA

I found the same thing and sent them log files showing CPU usage frequently at 93-100% (unless I'm misunderstanding how to read them). One user doing anything CPU intensive seems to cause everyone to slow down.

I began setting a lower CPU priority on pages that I know are CPU intensive. I believe this has helped, as I haven't had as many complaints from my users about slowdowns in the last day or so.

However, one person running a report that links about 5 tables in a set, goes through few thousand records, and prints about 300 pages to a pdf, shouldn't bring a multi-user system to its knees.

This leads me to the conclusion that either WAS is not robust enough for my needs, or it still has a major bug.
