Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Setting Script Path from shortcut

I have just changed from A4v3 in W98 to A4v8 in WinXP. To set the Scripts path in W98 I added -D=path to the program shortcut but I can't get it to work in A4v8 in WinXP. The shortcut produced by A4 during installation reads:-
    C:\ALPHA4V8\UNWISE.EXE /W1 "C:\ALPHA4V8\INSTALL.LOG"
I want to have my data and scripts on the D:\ Drive so I added:-
-D=D:\Alpha4v8\Scripts after the .exe in the above line, also after the /W1 and after .LOG" in turn but it doesn't work in any of these three positions.
I am also in some doubt as to whether I should use -D=D (with an equals sign between the two D's) or -D#D (with a hash sign between the D's).
I would be grateful if someone can explain exactly how I should write this in A4v8. Thanks.

    Mike,

Not sure if this is the recommended way, but I'd place your command line parameters in the Alpha_Start2.bat file located at C:\alpha4v8.

I had composed a longer more thorough reply but this flaky board keeps logging me out before I can post so you're getting the condensed version!

Re: Setting Script Path from shortcut

      Hello

Thank you for your response which arrived while I was away on holiday. My holiday gave me the chance to read some of the manual which suggested using the command line
      C:\ALPHA4V8\a4.exe -D#D:\ALPHA4V8\SCRIPTS\
(software on Drive C and Scripts on Drive D) so it begs the question why did the install routine dump the command line
      C:\ALPHA4V8\UNWISE.EXE /W1 "C:\ALPHA4V8\INSTALL.LOG"
on my machine when the software was intalled.

      Thanks again for your help.

        Mike,

Until your first post I had never seen that command line, "C:\ALPHA4V8\UNWISE.EXE /W1 "C:\ALPHA4V8\INSTALL.LOG".

I too wonder about that. I have no clue as to what that command line does differently than starting Alpha4 by the procedures outlined in the ref manual.

Did the method you last posted, (C:\ALPHA4V8\a4.exe -D#D:\ALPHA4V8\SCRIPTS\ ) work for you?? I think had some difficulties doing it that way but I may be remembering incorrectly.

          Hello TJ

The command line (C:\ALPHA4V8\a4.exe -D#D:\ALPHA4V8\SCRIPTS\ ) does work on my machine, but remember that my scripts are on the D: Drive so anyone having their scripts on the C: Drive with the program would need to change the letter after the hash sign from #D: to #C:

            Mike,

I may be remembering incorrectly or maybe I was trying to set too many parameters back when I set up Alpha4. I use batch file(s) to start Alpha and in the command line I am setting the startup database, startup script, script path, script search path, shared configuration directory, multi-user mode, and maybe some other things I'm forgetting, but the diffference here is I'm doing all those parameters in the Alpha_Start_2 batch file.

              Hi,
It is not a good idea to set a script path on the shortcut. As you noted if the drive letter changes this shortcut will fail. A4 has an inbuilt configuration area to setup these things. If this is an application, select Application->Create/edit Application from the mainmenu. Select the Application you want to edit. The first thing that you will see is the Application Parameters. There are six parameters in this list. The very one that relates to your case is the Script Path: Enter <DATAPATH> in this area. A4 will use this parameter to seek out the application scripts in any drive your application is running. This is independent of the drive letter. Make sure you save your changes.

                Hello

Thank you very much for your advice. I did have the script path entered in the parameters and had remembered to change it to point to my D: Drive but spotted another error when I was looking a few minutes ago. I only use the Application part of the time and it was when I was working directly on the database or set that I was having the problem which now seems to be solved.

                Thanks.

                  Hello Rawlings,

Iin my case I am not using an application, but I am setting that same script path value in my batch file(s) via the command line parameter -D#"<Datapath>"

Other location-specific paths I set via command line parameters are using mapped drives that are created by the batch file(s) as well.

                  Regards,

                  TJ Baker
