Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PACE or Liberty?

    Hi there,
Now that I have purchased Alpha Five I need to learn it. I noticed the training by both PACE and the book from Liberty, due to the exchange rate here in SA I will not be able to purchase both sets. Both are probably good but maybe someone can assist me in my decision which set to purchase.

    Kind regards
    George

    Hi George,

Just my personal opinion here. I purchased the Liberty books when I first started using Alpha and found them no more useful than the free tutorials that are available at the Alpha website.

I attended a 2 day PACE training and found it extremely useful and find that I still refer back to the manual we received then.

I think the PACE manual is maybe a little clearer.

      Hi George

I echo Bob's viewpoint. While I did not attend the PACE Training in person - I have purchased their books. I have the Liberty Manuals as well. That being said - I wish I had just spent more time going through all the info on the Alpha Tutorials and Learning pages on their site. You can learn everything you need to get started right there for free (other than the cost of the paper and ink to print it out :) )

If you really want to buy the books, I would also agree with Bob that the PACE manuals are a little better.

      Regards,

      Jeff

        Hi again George,

Overnight I had another thought for you. As you start your journey with Alpha you should be sure to check out Cal Locklin's naming conventions at:

        http://aimsdc.net/Tips_Funcs/A5_Naming_Conventions.htm

This is a very well thought out process for naming your fields, forms, reports, etc. and it is free!

I would also recommend you buy Cal's Formatting add-in. It is one slick piece of software. Big time saver and it is more than affordable when you consider what it does!

        It is located here:

        http://aimsdc.net/Tips_Funcs/Format.htm

        Regards,

        Jeff

          Re: PACE or Liberty?

Well I have now bought both the sets, just opened them and will share my experience when I have the time. Just by the look of it the Pace books feel of a higher quality (I know that is nothing to go by). The Liberty sets do include a cd, oh yes and I bought the Functions & Expressions from Liberty, and received another cd.

          Kind regards
          George

            Re: PACE or Liberty?

Now that I have finished reading the PACE manuals I would like to post my comments, and hope that it will be useful to those individuals who contacted me for my observations.

This is in no way a bashing session and I say this respectfully.

            1. I have read better quality manuals.
            2. The PACE manuals did have a quirk (spelling etc) here and there, something I did not expect.
            3. I did expect more detail and on a wider scope.
            4. Im not sure that a novice (someone without programming experience) will be able to pickup the manuals and start coding after a week. Although in fairness I have to say that I was able to start coding after 2 nights of reading, but then again I have almost 20 years programming experience.)

DESPITE all that, and the fact that these manual are pretty expensive considering the exchange rate here in South Africa, I consider that money well spent and the manuals were a great help. It surely fast tracked me and my staff.

I am now ordering the web manual.

            Kind Regards
            George
