Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I finally had a chance to take a look. The problem seems to be in refreshing the calc field. Since I seldom use calc fields, I don't usually see this problem. The simple solution, and this should work for any calc field, is to add a calc field to the FORM and show this field in the browse rather than the table's calc field. Since the calculation is handled by the form, it will appear immediately and you should see no change in performance.

I simply added this calc field to the form:
    qs_ext = Quote_Sum->Quantity*Quote_Sum->Rate
and displayed that for the "ext" column.

Although there are exceptions, I don't use calc fields in tables. First, it's easy to calculate them on the layouts when needed. Second, although a minor issue these days, is the extra space they take on the HD.

However, there are rare times when I use them because of a sorting/filtering issue. If the sort/filter will work significantly faster with the calc field, then I create a calc field. Otherwise, I just include the calculation in the sort/filter expression.

Re: Refresh Display function not as I thought

Is this thread ever going to stop?
My guess is: No, not any time soon.

It's a testimony to how badly alpha needs to revamp the browse!

I keep getting all these emails related to this thread, and quite honestly, after a while, I start suffering from "thread fatigue" and quit reading the posts. If the point could not be made in few replies, maybe it will never be made!

I will make one comment though and hope I am not opening a big can of worms here or punishing myself with a new slew of emails:

In this thread, in a nutshell, couple ideas were presented on how to refresh the renegade embedded browse:

1-My suggestion: which is to run a query on the embedded browse after you make your changes. If for some reason or another you hate queries, don't use it, which leaves us with:

2-Cal/Tom suggestion (with some modification) to write directly to the embedded browse as you would to any field. In my opinion, this is fine but it has some limitations:

      a-Minor one: it's slow
b-Major: it will work if you are adding new records to the browse, but what about when you delete records?! Does the error message "Inexact match" sounds familiar? You can overcome this, but
c-what about if you are writing to or deleting from an external table? for example: if you append a record from one browse in your form to a browse based on another table and you want to see the changes take place immediately? say you closed an account and moved it from the active accounts' table to the archived accounts' table, or
d- a situation that was written about recently when you zap the child table? or simply delete a range of records from the browse? or
e-add a new record to the browse and the new record does not match the filter and/or sort order in the embedded browse?
