Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    0 + 0 = 1 ???

    Here is some code taken from a script that runs when I click on a button on my form.

    Code:
    Dim nFld1 as N
    Dim nFld2 as N
    Dim nSum as N
    nFld1 = topparent:browse1.Fld1.value
    nFld2 = topparent:browse1.Fld2.value
    nSum = nFld1 + nFld2
    Browse1 is an embedded browse on my form that shows two columns: Fld1 and Fld2. Both are numeric.

    So here are the results I get when I fill in these two fields and click on the button that runs the script and shows the result back on the form:

    1. Fld1 = 2, Fld2 = 5, nSum = 7
    2. Fld1 = 0, Fld2 = 0, nSum = 0

    No surprises so far. Try this though.

    3. Fld1 = no value, fld2 = 5, nSum = no value
    4. Fld1 = no value, fld2 = no value, nSum = 1

    These two results are not what I want, nor expect. Is this a new branch of math that I don't yet know about?

    What I really want is for A5 to treat no value in the same way as zero so that the answers in examples 3 and 4 are 5 and zero respectively. This has to be one of the weirdest problems I have encountered in A5.

    Does anyone know the solution?

    Re: 0 + 0 = 1 ???

    Two ideas:

    a) do not permit either field to be blank

    b) change the expression so that it doesn't add the "value" of a blank field, and returns zero if both are blank

    Your assumption that a blank numeric field object has a zero numeric value is probably the root of the difficulty. You may recall my earlier advice to look for a different approach instead of using blank numeric fields in your app. http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=63051

      Re: 0 + 0 = 1 ???

      Long ago I found that it was savest never to GET the value of a numeric object on a form. Instead, using your example, I would use:
      val( topparent:browse1.Fld1.text )

      SETTING the value with something like topparent:browse1.Fld1.value = 5 is fine but GETTING the value is safer if done by getting the val() of the text result.

      As Tom pointed out, "Your assumption that a blank numeric field object has a zero numeric value is probably the root of the difficulty."

      FYI: Another way is to get a pointer to the table:
      tp = parentform:tables:<tablename>.this
      nSum = tp.Fld1 + tp.Fld2

        I vowed to stay away from the board since I really do not have time and this board could be very addictive, but I couldn't pass on this one:

        Brett:
        There is NOTHING wrong with:
        a-Math. Has not changed since Archimedes or whatever his name is
        b-You, nor
        c-your concept

        But being the nice guy you are, you left out a four letter word! No, not that word, the other one: EVAL!

        Your script will work perfectly fine if you change it to:
        nSum = eval("nFld1 + nFld2")

          Many thanks for your help, Tom, Cal, Gabriel. It would be fair to say that I find one of the most baffling aspects of A5 is the correct syntax for constructs referencing browse fields on a form. There are a number of things in the posts here that are new to me so I will be studying them in some detail. I had been using Tom's suggested solution, but this bloated my code to the extent that I realized there just had to be a better way. And, ahhh, yes, Gabriel's four letter word proved more effective than the ones I was using. ;) Thanks for the table syntax too, Cal. I often find the syntax I use inadvertently opens another pointer instance of the table when what I really want is a a pointer to the current instance of the table on the form. Good one! Thanks again.
