Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    attach external files to customer

    Ive got a customer list and want to attach external files to it as soon as I receive them.

    i.e. I've got a customer called KRB with a defined fax nr and email address recorded. As soon as an email or fax arrives a copy needs to be send to a file connected to KRB. If that folder doesn't exist, it needs to be created automatically in a previously disigned folder (i.e. C:\program files\KRB). As soon as I open the customers form I would like to get an overview of the received documents obtained from this customer.

    Would there be someone how could give me some solutions?

    Thanks a lot!

          Hi Andy,

          That is a pretty neat function. Never looked at it before in the CHM.

          Thanks for asking the question Evert.

            Ed,

            A caution: Data is not best stored in Program Files. there are lots of threads here on that one.

              Re: attach external files to customer

              Hi Andy,

              my address is [email protected]. i dont plan on storing anything in the programme. i am looking for something that can add directory files (word and pdf files) into a table and then be able to link back to them from within the table using the browse onrowdblclick event. the idea being that a user can locate any stored file for each customer without having to use windows explorer and navigate to the document.

              i would like to progress this a little further and have reports and letters generated within the programme auto saved to a folder created for each customer, to save the user from having to save manually and then attach as per my initial intentions.

              any ideas on the first most appreciated and on the second a bonus.

              thanks

              richard

                Code:
                [FONT=Times New Roman]'Execute inline Xbasic code.[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]'Run a custom Backup job.[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]dim drivename as c[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]DIM comment_text as c [/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]comment_text = "Backup the Data"[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]DIM Shared  drivename as c [/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]drivename = ui_get_list("Select a drive","A:","B:","C:","D:","E:","F:")  ' could designate drive and folder.[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]dim global themasterpath as c[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]themasterpath = a5.Get_Master_Path()[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]if len(alltrim(themasterpath)) = 0 then[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]    themasterpath = A5.GET_PATH()    [/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]end if[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]copy_folder(alltrim(themasterpath) ,alltrim(drivename) + "\bigsave") ' <-Bigsave could be your new folder[/FONT]

                [FONT=Times New Roman]Note:[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]you could augment this procedure with copy_files() thus creating a folder if it does not exist and then copy the file[/FONT]
                [FONT=Times New Roman]to the folder[/FONT]
                This is my backup routine. With a little work you could put your files whereever you want and retrieve with built in code.

                  If you store the path and name of a file for which windows has a resgistered "program used to open that filetype" in a field in a table, all you need for the code for the onrowdblclick is

                  sys_open(columntitle.value)

                  where columntitle is the heading for the field that stores the file drive_path_name_extenstion as it appears when viewing the browse (not necessarily the field it represents)

                  If the browse is embedded on a form then you will need

                  browseobjectname:columntitle.value

                  For a simple test, create an excel file in the root c:\ directory named demo.xls. Open a browse in view mode. In a text field store c:\demo.xls, note the column title of the text field chosen. Open the browse in design mode, Choose Browse menu, Events, Onrowdblclick, code as indicated above.

                  Save the browse, double click on the row where you entered the file information.
                  There can be only one.
