Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    instant messaging

    Dear all,

I would like to ask if it is possible (and reasonable) to write an instant messaging application in A5 using the WAS.
I imagine something like web based users accessing an A5 application, and a database which contains logins for the users, and a grid/form or whatever to show the messages that appear from everyone.

What do you think? Would there be performance issues? I was thinking of 20, 50 or 100 users.

    Regards

    Re: instant messaging

Your description sounded different than an instant message system. Do you mean, when someone logs in, that they would then see one or more messages left for them at some previous time? And, if they wanted to, they could go looking to see if they had more messages.

Or do you mean that at any time any user wanted to they could initiate a message to someone else and it would actually interrupt the receiver without them pressing any button or request to see the message, like AOL's IM system?

      Re: instant messaging

      Hello Steve,

      I appreciate your interest.

Here's what I am thinking of:

We have say 50 users who are connected to a conference call (audio only).
There is someone who is talking to all the rest and the users are muted.

OR there is a streaming video presentation in which users are able to attend but they cannot give feedback.

In both those cases the users would need a "chat" system to place questions.

So I am talking about a system where the user actually runs the program when there is such a presentation, no need to have it on like AOL / MSN messenger / Skype, but it's still an instant messaging / chat application.
The users need to ask questions which are seen by everyone and the speaker may choose to reply either in writing or by voice.

I guess this is more clear now, what's your opinion?
I think it can be done, I am only afraid of performance issues with many users.

      Regards

      Dennis Zervas

I'm no expert, but I doubt the number of users would impact performance. The issue, though, is that users would have to manually refresh their browser - unless there is a javascript command that can do that for you.

          hi Peter
          i believe that
the easiest way is to use the meta tag to
          automatically refresh the browser window

          <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="40">

the above would reload the contents every 40 secs
          regards

Many thanks, this is quite useful. I think the whole thing could be done. In fact I will try it...

I had another thought: Can I do the same without a WAS but with desktop applications?

              Regards

It's (relatively) easy w. the desktop.
