Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How slow is Alpha's 7 web server ?

Hi. I'm new to Alpha software. Several weeks ago I purchased a bundle that included the web server. I got the Alpha Software newsletter today and now they have another bundle that includes a runtime version of the web server.

I purchased Alpha Software to write a web based application to sell on the internet and I believe 100% of my customers will run it on an intranet so a runtime version of the web server would a great thing to have, UNLESS, as I read in the forum here that it is very slow. I also read that the next version, v8, is support to be much faster.

I said all of that to ask this, I have very limited funds , so would it be best to purchase the v7 web server runtime on sell now or wait for a higher priced and maybe faster v8 web server runtime, assumig of course there will be a runtime version of 8 available?

    Thanks,
    TD

I don't get those announcements, but I doubt that there is a web server runtime available. Are you sure it is not the desktop version runtime which comes in 3, 10 and 20 user packs? There are lots of discussions on the forum about WAS performance; please search for recent discussions.

You've misunderstood the offer - as Steve said there is no Web Application Server runtime.

Actually, you had everyone excited for a moment. Its been talked about and perhaps will be a reality some day. It would be useful, we figure, to develop a single web app rather than a desktop app AND also a web app for deployment.

No one's addressed the original question: How slow is the web server?

My answer is "not very." It's quite satisfying, and I know Alpha's doing things to improve it for version 8.

I and a few others have tried to quantify the speed, but there are too many variables involved. We did decide that it probably won't handle one customer's proposed needs of up to 600 hits per second, but the software was just one factor in that equation.

              Thanks Steve.

I read more of the postings regarding the speed of the web server and came away with the idea that the web server runtime was meant for a developer to purchase and then use it to host his applications on his server for his customer's to use via the internet, hence the high price of the web server runtime . What I want is for my customer's to purchase my web application and the web server runtime from me to run their own intranet web server which would host my web application which they will be using.

I guess as it is now they will have to purchase it from Alpha Software. I'm thinking that the customer might think twice about purchasing my web app if they have to start purchasing pieces from two different companies to make it work.

Wonder if Alpha Software would be interested in selling a web server version that maybe limits the number of concurrent connections to say three users, at a much reduced price of course. What does everyone think about this?

Nope, I disagree. The job of limiting the number of concurrent users to a particular web application can/should be the developer's, not Alpha Software's.

                  TD,

If you contact Theresa at Alpha, they will let you bundle their software in with your product sale - so you can be the single source. Several of us liked the idea of a 'runtime' version for distribution purposes. I know Alpha can limit the number of concurrent users because that was the original plan, which they scrubbed when we complained loudly. The subject has not come up again until you raised it, but I think it is a great idea to have a limited use 'runtime' or local-only version of WAS for distributing one or small-user base applications.

The right time to bring it back up is around the first of the year when v8 is in full swing.
