Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Authorize.net and SSL

I've read through the help and the messages on this board enough that I finally think I understand what questions to ask, so here goes:

I am setting up an on-line event registration application for a local association, and everything is going great to this point. We are taking preregistrations on line. Now we want to start taking credit card payment for preregistration for the events. To make it easy on me, I plan to use Authorize.net.

    Questions:
    1. Does the built in transaction processing work with AIM or SIM? (I down loaded both guides)

    2. Do I need my site to have an SSL certificate, or is the Authorize.net SSL enough?

    3. We will be transferring our domain and the existing web pages to Alpha5Hosting so we don't have to pay for two hosting services, but the current long-time volunteer webmaster uses FrontPage. Can we put FrontPage generated pages on the web server?

    4. I think I understand that I have to have all of my site on SSL if I have any of it. So, if some visitor wants to look at our site, could they type in asqpdx.com (our current site) and have the browser fill in the https:// part?, or do browsers auto complete just http:// ?

    Thanks,
    Pat

    It uses AIM 1.0

The Authorize.Net SSL encrypts the communications between your app server and the Authorize.Net payment gateways only. It does nothing to protect the sensitie payment infor while it is in transit btween the applicatij user's browser and your server. That is the reponsibility of your server, so yes, you should get your own SSL certificate.

You can use FrontPage generated pages, but the server does not support FrontPage extensions so you cannot use any of the extension functionality.

A browser will typically auto-complete just the http://, though there is no standard that defines the behavior so it is possible that some browser out there might try https:// first.

However you should check with FirmSupport because I believe their infrastructure allows you to use both straight HTTP as well as SSL on the same site.

I use the AIM guide as suggested in A5's help file.

Short answer: You don't need to have the SSL. But users who submit their cc info will appreciate it. SSL provides security between your server and your users' browsers.

In general, yes. FrontPage isn't known for its clean code, so you'll just have to check the pages once they're published to make sure they look and behave correctly.

No, you can have some of it SSL, and some non-SSL. It's more convenient to put everything in one place, but a bigger load on the server. I have a secure site at FirmSupport and found the tech support crew there very helpful in getting what I want. I'd ask them how to best go about this and work with them.

Shoot, now I see Lenny has answered. Where his answers vary from mine, defer to Lenny at all times.
