Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    search not returning proper results

    Attached is a sample db to see the issue.

    Open f_carr_info
    Select the Carrier Equip tab
    Use the PgDn/PgUp keys
    You will see 4 records, all with 1 or more equip desc in the embedded browse
    Select the Search/Misc tab
    Click on Search by Equipment Desc button
    Select any item from the drop down list and click OK
    No matter what you select, no records are returned

    Press ctrl+q or select the querie genie
    Query records at which level: select tcarrequip
    Condition: Equip_desc - is equal to - Select an existing value from the field
    Run the query
    No matter what you select, no records are returned

    Why can't I get either search to return matching records to the equip_desc field in the tcarrequip table? Surely I am missing something simple, yet again :)

    Re: search not returning proper results

    Without looking it's important to know whether you are trying to find parent records that have linked children that match the search criteria (a crosslevel search), or whether you want to leave all parents visible, but restrict the child table display to matching records. In the latter case parents with no linked children that match will still show up but the browse would be empty. In the former only parents that have children who match the search key will show up. Two different things. -- tom

      Re: search not returning proper results

      Actually, what I want is a cross level, which I believe is the way I have my filter set behind the button:

      Code:
      "tcarrequip->EQUIP_DESC = ' " + Var->vcgCarrEquip + " ' "
      If you do a cross level search in the genie, it is the proper return in the sample I attached. I looked at its expression which I believe agrees with mine above with the exception of my using a variable.

      When I attempt to do a cross level search using the genie in my working db, it takes more than a minute and still returns no results. The only diff between the two is that my working db has over 150k records in the set.

      EDIT: Correction, just re-ran the genie using the cross-level. It took almost 3 minutes, but did return the proper result. When watching the lower left progress it is showing it going through over 300,000 records .... there are not that many records in the entire db. The genie appears to be going through every instance of every table linked to the set .... and not just the tcarrequip table, which is odd.

      So if the cross level genie does return the proper result, even though it takes forever, why is my filter not working?

          Thanks Gabe, but my client really prefers the keylist_build() approach. I do not see any real difference in your filter than in mine, just a different variable name.

            Re: search not returning proper results

            It took a combination of three changes in order to make my search return the proper results.

            I changed my filter from:

            Code:
            "tcarrequip->EQUIP_DESC = ' " + Var->vcgCarrEquip + " ' "
            to:

            Code:
            "tcarrequip->EQUIP_DESC = Var->vcgCarrEquip"
            Which was my original filter, but that by itself did not resolve the issue. I then changed in my srch_contacts() function:

            Code:
            from:

                        frm.BaseQueryRun( query.filter, query.order )

            to:

                        frm.QueryRun( query.filter, query.order )
            This, with the new filter, still did not return the proper results. I made the following change in my srch_contacts() function:

            Code:
            from:

                    query.filter = srch_filter
                    query.order = srch_order
                    'replace variables in the filter with their actual values
                    query.filter = convert_expression( query.filter, "V" )

            and:
                        frm.QueryRun( query.filter, query.order )

            to:
                    DIM GLOBAL vcgSrchFilter as C
                    DIM GLOBAL vcgSrchOrder as C

                    vcgSrchFilter = srch_filter
                    vcgSrchOrder = srch_order
                    'replace variables in the filter with their actual values

            and:
                        frm.QueryRun( vcgSrchFilter, vcgSrchOrder )
            I tried all three of these changes individually and every possible combination between them, the query only returns the proper result with ALL three changes.

            Does anybody know why??????

            Thanks
            Cheryl
