Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I show selected filter parameters for a report in the report

Could someone please give me direction on the above.

I have created a report that asks for date parameters at run time.
I wish to show the parameters, selected in the dialogue box, within the completed report
e.g This report shows invoices between "start date" and "end date". where start date and end date were the values selected.
    How would I accomplish this.

    Thank you
    Robert

Check the drag / drop list for your report layout. If you see "start date" and "end date", why not drag them into your page header band in your layout? -- tom

Re: How do I show selected filter parameters for a report in the report

      Hi tom,

Apologies for not replying earlier but have been out all day.

I don't see how that would work because my detail section would have a whole series of dates under the star date and end date fields as each individual invoice would have start and end dates for each period that the invoice covers.

To better understand my filters would be for instance select all invoices where the start dates are greater than such and such a date(Selected by client)and the end dates are less than such and such a date.

The values selected would be variable and only known at the time of selection.

Robert, does that mean that your misgivings about the recommendation have prevented you from even trying it?

Notwithstanding the fact that each invoice may cover transactions within a different range of dates, presumably each invoice has a single invoice date, and presumably that's the date that must fall between the report start date and the report end date. If this is not what you're talking about then you're correct to ignore me, cause I don't understand the question.

Apologies Tom I misinterpreted your suggestion thinking that I was to drag my start and end date fields from detail to header.

Tried as you suggested and what showed up was the start and end dates from the first invoice and not the start and end date from the selection dialogue box.

          apologies

Ok, please describe exactly how the report start_date and report_end date values are being filled. i.e. Is this scripted before the report is opened, or have you defined these in the report layout itself as variables ? (I was assuming the latter was the case, if so you should see the variables in the varialbes section of the drag/drop list. It sounds like you dragged the table fields into the layout instead of the variables.)

How are you? Haven't talked for over a year now.... Hope all is well. That is a big pond to cross. :D

Depending on how the parameters are handled in the dialogue box, you should be able to see them as variables from the report. It may be a matter of how they are dimmed.

Or you can show the current filter on the report. It's not as pretty as what you can format with individual variables, but serves the purpose.

Please post an example of what you have if this message doesn't clear it up.....

Re: How do I show selected filter parameters for a report in the report

                Tom

After creating the report i created button on main menu to print/preview a report seeking additional parameters at runtime.

The additional parameters are enter Start date, where start date fields in the invoice are > "Enter a date value in the textbox"
2nd condition and the end date values in the invoice are "Enter a date value in the textbox"

The returning report then shows all invoices where start date > date entered and end date < date entered.

What I am trying to do is to put both values entered in the dialogue in the header to the report to show between what dates the invoices in the report are for.

I now realise that I probably should be declaring variables somewhere so that I can put the variable values in the header but do not know where in the process these values are created.

                Thanks Tom.

Hi Al nice to hear from you. hope you are keeping well. Thanks for the response.

It seems to be a variable issue that I don't have a handle on yet. Will have to go back through the process to see where variables are introduced and can then be called up again - I think?????

                  Thanks Al

                    Robert, Tom & Al:
What Robert is trying to say is:
He presents the user with a dlg box (or something similar).
The user chooses two dates, Start Date & End Date.
These are two variables and he needs to know how to place them on the report.

Answer: (not the only one, but probably the simplest):
Open your report in design mode
From the fields pane, under variables, drag "New variable", place it on the report and name it the same name of the variable in the dlg box. Repeat the same for the end date.

i created button on main menu to print/preview a report seeking additional parameters at runtime.
Since you are calling the report from a menu, you need to make these variables global and when you open the report in design mode, they will be there.
I am typing and answering the phone at the same time, I hope this makes sense

An interesting situation. I thought something didn't make sense, so Robert was kind enough to send the objects in question to me. It's a choice within the system that I haven't used yet, so I got to learn a couple of new things. ;)

I followed his instructions and converted the action scripting to xbasic to see what was going on.

                            Robert.
You are using the option to select records when calling the report and the method being used involves getting the parameters into a pointer variable and resolving the filter using those pointer variables.

Unfortunately, the pointer variable isn't passed, so it's not available for the report.

                            Options.

                            1. Use one of the examples that uses an xdialog to prompt for your dates and make the variables global.

                            2. Convert the action script that you have to xbasic and add global variables with the values of the pointer variable so the report can see them.

I find it easier to dim the globals in the autoexec script. They are then available to the report regardless of the timing of the running of the script. Makes it a lot easier to modify the report and not run into errors when variables haven't been dimmed yet..

                            Personally I'd choose option 1.

                            Attached is a related image.
