Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with Link Address

I'm trying to create a link which will take the user from the simple searchable grid that he is on, to the actual record in it's full length, which is normally available on a different grid.

My link field is called "Record_No." The page containing the secondary grid is "NCCEViolationSet.a5w." And the actual grid within that page is called "ViolationSet_ncce.a5wcmp."

My link address is as follows:

    NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=record_no="{Record_No}"

When the user clicks on the link, it takes him to the correct .a5w page, but the only thing showing is the search section of the grid. It is not opening the actual record.

My Record_No field is numeric. I've tried the above address with single quotation marks, double quotation marks, and with no quotation marks, and I get the same result every time.

Is my link address set up wrong?

Steve W., any ideas on this one? There are examples on the grid link builder, but even following the examples I can't seem to get it to work.

        Re: Problem with Link Address

Thanks Jerry, but I still don't seem to be having any luck. In the example on the post you referred me to, the sample link address is:
        HTML Code:
        customers.a5w?customers_filter=bill_state_region=%22NY%22
and based on that example, I came up with the following address for my situation:

        My a5w page is: NCCEViolationSet.a5w
        The grid name is: ViolationSet_ncce.a5wcmp
My filtering field is: Record_No (which is a numeric, auto-incrementing field)

        HTML Code:
        NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter_Record_No={Record_No}
Instead of getting the filtered record, I get the first record in the database.
        Any further thoughts?

Rich, Try the following syntax and let me know if it works in your situation:
          Code:
          NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=Record_No='{Record_No}'

            Hi Pete,

No that didn't work. Same thing happens, I get the first record in the database.

How about this? (I'm just wild guessing):

                  Code:
                  NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=trim(str(Record_No))='{Record_No}'

                    Hi Martin,

Here's what shows in the address bar when I click on one of my links. In this case, it should return Record No. 16625.

                    HTML Code:
                    http://10.1.10.40/NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=Record%5FNo%3D%2716630%27

                        Re: Problem with Link Address

                        FWIW: I meant to say:

                        Code:
                        NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=[COLOR=Red][B]alltrim[/B][/COLOR](str(Record_No))='{Record_No}'
                        Because:
                        Code:
                        ?trim(str(123))
                        = " 123"

                        ?alltrim(str(123))
                        = "123"

                            Rich

if the link you clicked gave you the above
this would be the same as typing directly into the address bar
                            the following

                            http://10.1.10.40/NCCEViolationSet.a5w?ViolationSet_ncce_filter=Record_No='16630'

if the record_no is NUMERIC then type the following into a new blank browser window address bar
                            http://10.1.10.40/NCCEViolationSet.a...ecord_No=16630

if this doesnt return the record with the record_num equal to 16630

                            then
                            1) this record might not exist - but i am sure that it does so i would suspect that the destination component might be your problem possible the inclusion of the search part

one way to check this is to make another component based on the same info and
DONOT include a search part or a detail part - and set the number of rows to display to 1 and make sure you include the record_no field in the new grid and that it is displayed

then create a new page and see if you can get this to display the correct record
                            regards

Martin, I too was concerned about the fact that I had a search option in the grid, as well as having it set hide the grid when no seach was being conducted.

So at your advice, I created a duplicate a5w page containing a duplicate grid, but this time without a search component, and set to display one record. The new address is:

                              http://10.1.10.40/NCCEViolationSet2....ecord_No=16630

Unfortunately, I get the same result. First record of the database only. (And record #16630 does exist.)

Incidentally, my records are shown in a freefrom layout. That shouldn't make any difference, should it?
