Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot Copy Text from Rich Text Memo Field

    Hello Guys:

I now work in the real world where Access dominates, and 99% of the people who work in the governement and/or private industry, never heard of A5. That's unfortunate because I've learned that Access is in many ways a vastly inferior product. In fact, I'm thinking about starting a thread listing the many ways in which Access is inferior to A5. When Access 20007 arrives early next year, they will finally start to make the product easier for their users.

I truly miss most of the guys with whom I've communicated with starting way back around 1990 and lasting almost 15 years. I also miss work with A5 very much.I also appreciated the way Richard, Selwyn, and Lenny treated me over the years.

Anyway, I ran into one of those bizarre, frustrating quirks that's driving me crazy. I have a very simple Contacts application with a basic Parent-Child relationship linked by Contact_ID [character field]. Whenever I have contact with someone, I try my best to post notes in the child table which has only two fields, Contact_ID [link to parent] and a Rich Text Memo field called Notes.

Today I went to see my doctor for a fairly serious problem, and as usual, I took notes and saved them. I then decided to copy 15 years of medical notes from my doctor into Word and it wouldn't work. Every time I tried copying into Word, instead of copying the actual text, the following was inserted:

    30302020204Comic Sans MS;

Now listen to this, I can go to any other parent record and copy the text from the child table's notes field into Word. So far, this is the one and only field where I see the above mentioned bizarre behavior. Of course as life would have it, this field has far and away the most important information and that's why I want to copy it from Alpha and paste it into Word.

Since I spend so much time in Access now, I decided to import the table into Access 2003 and then I was confident I could cut and paste from Access into Word. However, Access would not import the child table but I could easily import the parent table.

I then tried changing the field from a Rich Text Memo field to a plain old Memo field and each time I saved that change, A5 would close and fail to save the change.

Something very strange is going on and for the life of me, I cannot figure out what it is. Any thoughts or suggestions? By the way, I've compacted the database, rebuilt the parent-child relationship, closed Alpha, reopened it, and the problem persists.

    Thanks,
    Robert T

check the size of the related fpt file - if its size it disproportionately large, the file may be corrupted.

Re: Cannot Copy Text from Rich Text Memo Field

      Hello Martin:

Thanks for the suggestion, however, the size of the FPT file isn't abnormally large considering the fact that it has about 15 years worth of notes stored in those memo fields. Let me once again point out, other records are fine, if I move up or down one record, I can copy from the Rich Text Memo field and paste the formatted text directly into Word.

I can see my doctor's notes in this specific record, they're all intact. However, I just cannot copy the data from A5 and paste it into Word. I always receive the message I displayed in the first part of this thread. If I were having problems with all of the child records, or even a handful, I too would suspect the file was corrupt. But that isn't the case and that's why I'm totally baffled. I was just hoping that someone else had the same problem and came up with a solution.

        Robert:
highlight the text in the RTF, copy to clippboard.
When you go to Word, choose "paste special", then choose "unformatted text".

          Robert,

          I wonder if
          *RTF_TO_PLAIN()
can convert the troubled note record for you?

            Hey Gabriel:

Thanks, the Edit Paste Special as "Unformatted Text" suggestion worked like a charm. I truly appreciate the input. On the down side, I lost all of my formatting, but I can live with that as the data is far more important.

Having said that, I'm still puzzled as to why this cut and paste problem happened only with this particular child record. Maybe I should say I haven't seen evidence of this in any other record, but I would have to assume the problem would show up in some other records, but so far it hasn't.

I would also like to know why I can't covert the field from Rich Text Memo to a plain old Memo field. Any thoughts?

You indicated you have 15 yrs worth of data in that record. Who knows what formating string were used over those 15 yrs.

I wouldn't worry about it nor waste any time trying to unravel this mystery. Most likely it had to do with the formting strings in that record and most likely it will not happen again with newly entered records.

why I can't covert the field from Rich Text Memo to a plain old Memo field.
I don't have this problem. Try to eliminate this renegade record and see if you can.

Re: Cannot Copy Text from Rich Text Memo Field

                Hi Gabriel:

You're probably right, this problem isn't worth the time and effort it would take to resolve the issue. I know I'm doing this because it's related to my long time track record of trouble shooting and solving these kinds of issues. It's almost second nature at this point in time, I think that's part of the fun of developing applications. Yeah, it's a real pain in the ass, but once you solve the mystery, it feels great.

By the way, if you don't have any problem converting a Rich Text Memo field to a plain Memo field, that tells me there is obviously some form up corruption in this simple little application that is approximately 15 years old. I initially created it way back when there was no Alpha Five. That means I created the app in Alpha Four and then converted it from DOS to Windows. I have note fields in many records that are 10 to 15 years old. So in addition to my medical notes over that period of time, there's a lot more information I've documented.

                  Robert:
Tom's suggestion of converting to plain text might help, but the size of your RTF will be a limitation. You might have to work up a good xbasic routine to do that.

It's been a long time since I used v4. That's something in the far away memory. I believe alpha made quite a change in the memo fields. I wish I could think of a quick way to convert what you have to memo, although, I am not sure what is the benefit of that over RTF.
