Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Letters. Sets. Expression Builder. Displaying Multiple Records from a child table?!?!

I am trying to create a letter.

    I have a set.

It consists of the Parent table: Counts and a Child table: Selected_Areacodes.

The linking index for the set is a field called: countID.

The Child table also has other fields named:
    Areacode, min_age, max_age, min_income, max_income.

This set has a one-to-many relationship.

I need all of the child records to be displayed on my letter.

Does anyone know how I can achieve this? Thanks!

I do this using a report layout, instead of a letter layout.

      RTF in the header
put the fields from the child table in the details section.
      RTF in the footer

I started a thread about this a while back: letters vs reports. Can't remember the title.

How do you create a delails section in a letter? or are you talking about using a report?

A report. There is no detail section in the letter. You could do it with an xbasic routine in a letter, but it is not worth the trouble.

How would you go about doing something like that using Xbasic?

Re: Letters. Sets. Expression Builder. Displaying Multiple Records from a child table

              I thought you might ask:

a-you could initialize an array from the table, dumb the array in a variable and insert it in the letter, or

b-Insert a variable in the letter and in the OnPrint event of the letter, the variable will update with the values from the different records in the table.

In the end, it would look exactly like the report. So, if you have time to waste, you might want to try it.

I have asked alpha to "amalgamate" the letter & report so as you could take advantage of the features of each without going through this unnecessary trouble, particularly they are very close and it won't take much to do that.

                That would be great!
                Thanks again for your input.

Have you tried opening a blank report based on the same table/set and then import the letter into the report? From that point, you can continue editing with the features of report.

                    Al:
That would not produce the desired effect. The imported letter will provide you with the letter substance, but then you would have to have the records in the details section which is basically what I suggested to Jeff earler:
                    RTF
                    Details
                    RTF

Importing the letter will save you time in re-writing it, but you could do the same with copy/paste.

I do remember now the thread I started a while back, It discusses this issue in more details:

Re: Letters. Sets. Expression Builder. Displaying Multiple Records from a child table?!?!

                      OK NOW WHAT?!?!

I am trying to create a letter. (I abandoned this for a report)

                      I have a set.

It consists of the Parent table: Counts and 5 Child tables: Selected_Areacodes, Selected_Cities, Selected_Counties, Selected_zipcodes, and Selected_Radius.

The linking index for the set is a field called: countID.

The first four children tables all have a similar structure.
All of the field names are the same except the first one.
The common fieldnames are: CountId, ContactId, min_age, max_age, min_income, max_income.
There is a field in Selected_Areacodes called: Areacode
There is a field in Selected_Cities called: City
                      .....so on and so fourth.

The Selected Radius table has a few different fields:
                      Radius, Type, Center, CountId, ContactId, Income_Min, Income_Max, Age_Min, Age_Max.

This set has a one-to-many relationship.

I need all of the child records with a particular CountId to be displayed in my report.

                      Something similar to this:

                      Areacodes State Income Age
                      210 TX 25000-50000 23-40
                      341 NV 100000-150000 45-60
                      . . . .
                      . . . .
                      . . . .
                      911 DC 2500-5000 99-100

                      Cities State Income Age
                      San Antonio TX 40000-50000 25-90
                      Austin TX 100000-100000 30-45
                      . . . .
                      . . . .
                      . . . .

                      Counties State Income Age
                      Bexar TX 25000-30000 15-30
                      . . . .
                      . . . .

                      Zipcodes State Income Age

                      etc,....etc...

Does anyone know how I can achieve this? Thanks!

                        Jeff:
I am not sure what is the touble?
1-Create a report as you would any report to show the fields from the child in the details section
2-Insert the substance of the letter to preceed these fields' values in an RTF in the Header
3-And the part of the letter to follow these information in the footer section.
Now you have a "letter", with several records' values.

                          Jeff,

Use Sub-Reports for each child table.

                          Here's an example for you.

One part of the problem is that there are actually 5 child tables linked to the parent table. All of these need to be displayed if they contain related records. Another partPart of the problem is that I need Dynamic Column Names. If there are no Areacodes I don't want the Areacodes, State, Income, Age column names to be displayed. If there are no Zipcodes I don't want the Zipcodes, State, Income, Age column names to be displayed.

Aside from Tom's suggestion of using "sub-reports" I don't really see a good way to acomplish what I'm trying to do. If you know of a good way, I would really appreciate it if you could provide an example.
