Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Having problems running a database with runtime

    Hi,

I'm using a database written in V5 on my laptop. I have the full version installed and everything works as it should.

However, I'm now trying to install the database over a network, where none of the machines have the full version installed.

    The setup is as follows:

All database files are in a folder on the shared netwrok drive
All computers have Runtime installed, and are running the database files frm the shared drive.

I've used this setup in the past with different Alpha 5 databases, and it's worked fine but now it isn't.

The odd thing is, on my laptop (not connected to the network) and using the full version, everything works fine, but using Runtime on my laptop (still not connected to the network) and it doesn't.

It's kind of difficult to explain, but if anyone has the slightest inkling of what I'm on about, I'd really appreciate a reply, so we can look into this a it deeper.

    Thanks in advance,

    Steve

A little more detail than it isn't and it doesn't might help us diagnose. Error messages? Improper application execution? Freeze up or shutdown.
    There can be only one.

Re: Having problems running a database with runtime

You're right, Stan.. it was a bit vague!!

The database is used to value building works against an order number. Each order number is unique, and the value is built up from Materials, labour, plant etc.

There is an embedded browse for entering the elements of work (labour/plant etc). Each section is tabbed.

When starting a new order, each section should be empty, and when using the full version it is. But when I run the database using Runtime each section brings up the first entry inthe lookup table.

There are no error messages or anything like that - just the fields that should be empty are not.

Right then, I'm back home now where I can connect my laptop to the interweb... I've downloaded the patch from the Alpha 5 website and everything seems to be working as it should be now.

I've spent most of the day trying to resolve this, and it was something as simple as downloading a patch! I should have tried that first:o

So the full version was on a different patch level from the runtime version?

They are 2 different patches and I'm constantly forgetting to keep them up to date - especially when dealing with other client's machines.....

Usually doesn't cause too much trouble (unless you use the new features/fixes), but certainly could give puzzling results....

To be honest, I didn't check that.

In the full version, I clicked on the "Check internet for updates" thing in the Help menu, and it said there was a patch available. I downloaded the patch and ran it.

The computer has both the full and the runtime versions installed and the patch updated them both.

Another problem now though.... I made a self installing file and tried to emai lit to my client's offices, and it's 14Mb and an "exe", so Outlook won't send it. Looks like another trip into town for me then :)

Anything over 10 mb will be held up in email land somewhere.

I use an FTP based system and send a download link. There are free download areas available on the internet if you don't have the resources directly.

It's not a problem, really, Al. I was just being lazy!

I work from home and a trip to my client's office is only about 10 miles, but the kids are off school this week so it'd mean having to sort out childcare and stuff.

Still, if I go to the offices, I can charge for my time!!

It's an actual problem for me(remote support worldwide), so I shared my solution. And I use it for those that are within 10 minutes too.

At least it's another tool for you to have in your tool box.
