Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child Table Browse pointer table.current(2) lost

    I am weary searching and reading with this and need some help, please.

    I have a 3 table database
    Set tables: Customer 1:M Transactions linked via CustID
    Alone table: Balances

    My form based on the set contains a Browse for the Transactions child table. A button on the form contains a script that passes through a dialog box to acquire a variable (vperiod) for filtering the Transaction table with the outcome being the Browse will display the table filtered to a specific group of records. The script after the dialog box is this:

    Script-A:

    Code:
       dim vcustid as C
         vcustid = parentform:custid.value
       dim tbl as P

       tbl = table.current(2)
       query.filter = "period = "+s_quote(vperiod)
       query.options = ""
       query.order = ""
       idx = tbl.query_create()
       parentform.resynch()
       tbl.query_detach()
    This works GREAT but then fails after I run another script (Script-B) that updates the Balances table. Script-B contains several a5_get_records_in_query() events to the Transactions table so I'm believing what must be happening is that a5_get_records_in_query() is opening one or more instance(s) of the table and the designation in Script-A of tbl = table.current(2) must be getting thrown off.

    How do I test for which session of the table the Browse is pointed to (? is_obj())? And/or how can I reset this so the Browse pointer is table. current(2)? Or an alternate approach. Thank you.

      Hi MIke,

      I had a look and found that the problem had some thing to to with A5_get_records_in_query. When I commented out the two remaing instances of those in the Update balance script then the Button to filter the browse worked. I have no idea why this happens. Like you said the browse filtering button works until the update balances script is run. I used a different aproach in the code that filters the browse as a work around though. It uses the following
      Code:
      Parentform:Tables:Transactions.filter_expression = "period = "+s_quote(vperiod)
      Parentform:Tables:Transactions.query()
      The cust_id does not need to be included in the filter because the set is taking care of that. With this code I was able to uncomment the Records in query test in the Browse filtering scirpt.

      In the file attached is a form I was using to test called 'Main_test'. Have alook at the second Update button where I made a couple of suggestions which you can take or leave.

        Mike, why does your script detach the query immediately after running it? Once it's detached what view of the child table should be displayed?

        I took a look at the database and do not see Script-B. What am I missing?

          Tom, the script B is on the Update Balances Button. Once you press it the red button no longer behaves.

            Tom,
            The reason I have an approach to filtering the child table in my circumstance came from your help in this response to this thread. Thank you!

            Tim,
            Thank you seems insufficient. Looking at this certainly expended some brain power and I truly appreciate your efforts! I, as you, have a knowing that the issue lies in the A5_get...., but you were aware of a work around. I will study how the code If .NOT. exist() operates, but I'm thinking it mustnt open the table and behave as a5_get record_in query()- (a5griq) I thank you tremendously, as one of my premier table probes has been a5griq and in this instance was a solution that generated other issues.

            Best regards,

              Mike, the highlighted line was not in my earlier example, and is confusing me. I don't understand why you are releasing the query immediately after running it. I don't understand why you don't repaint (refresh display) after releasing the query.

              Code:
                 tbl = table.current(2)
                 query.filter = "period = "+s_quote(vperiod)
                 query.options = ""
                 query.order = ""
                 idx = tbl.query_create()
                 parentform.resynch()
                 [COLOR="Red"]tbl.query_detach()[/COLOR]

                Tom,
                Yes, of course you are correct. That was a remnant from the many trials of trying things to break the prior query. In process, I thought at one point the tbl.query_detach() did something positive, so it remained. But that was before I discovered that A5_get_records_in_query()was the culprit. The exactly mechanism of how this manifests the problem is still nebulous.
