Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report: Variable Not Shrinking

I have placed a Global Variable in my Report Footer and selected the Allow Shrinking Field Property, but the field does not shrink as expected.

Other objects (memo fields for example) shrink as expected.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

What value does the variable hold when you expect the object to shrink?

If no simple explanation is found, consider using a conditional object.

      Re: Report: Variable Not Shrinking

      Tom,

      Thanks for your reply.

This is a character variable (Global) which holds the contents of a memo field from a table that is not part of the set the report is based on.

If I create a report based on the table that the memo field belongs to and place the memo field itself on the report, then it does shrink as expected.

I suppose I could write the contents of the unrelated table's memo field to a memo field in the table the report is based on, but that would mean that every record would have a field full of otherwise unnecessary data, and... since it is a memo field, it could potentially be quite a bit of data.

Regardless, I wonder why a report field based on a variable won't shrink?

      Thanks again,

      Louis

Ok. What does "doesn't shrink as expected" mean? Are you trying to suppress an empty object, or are you trying to for something else?

put it in an rtf object

            Re: Report: Variable Not Shrinking

This is interesting to me because just tonight I experienced the following with report footer placement:

            1. A memo field in the footer would not grow when printing, and if shrink is also checked it won't print at all. Move the same field into the detail section and it grows (not sure I tested shrinking in the detail section).

            2. An rtf in the footer would also not grow when printing whereas it does in the detail.

The variable object that is placed on the report is 2 inches high and almost as wide as the report. If the text within the variable only takes up 1 inch of vertical space, then I would expect that only 1 inch of vertical report space would be occupied by the variable at print time.

As I indicated earlier, this is exactly how the "Allow Shrinking" feature works if the object is a memo field instead of a variable.

I did resolved the issue by making the memo field one of the fields in the set. It works properly now.

              Thanks to all who responded!

Raymond - also, neither grow nor shrink works in page footers rtfs. I reported all this at least twice at least 6 months ago.

Thanks martin. My guess is we have seen the last update patch so nothing else will be fixed for v7. Of course arguably this is not a bug--they might just say, "who would want growing and shrinking in a footer?" Me for one.

Last night I also noticed that color equations do not work if a field on a form is any kind of drop down rather than a Type-in field. Kind of a critical issue in an app of mine--I Mickey Moused [new verb!] a solution but it is crude (2 fields side by side, 1 type-in read only with a color equation, 1 drop down so narrow that the value does not show--very crude but it more less works). I put this one on the wish list cuz I just do not think anything more is going to happen with v7, though I am suspect they have fixed a bunch of things. (I certainly hope I am wrong about having seen the last v7 patch.)

Selwyn told me they may issue a last patch for V7 after V8 is out.
