Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to display full name in a Browse object

    Hi

    I'm a new alpha five 7 user...

    Here is what I'm trying to do:

    I'm creating a database to manage my contacts, my fields are as follow:

    - client_id
    - first_name
    - last_name
    - address
    - home_phone
    - cell_phone

    How do I display my contacts' full name (last + first name) in a browse object under one column separated by a comma?

    e.g => Doe, John

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    create a form calculated field by clicking the xy button on the toolbar
    write this calculated expression below:
    fullname = trim(last_name + ", " + trim(first_name)
    click the dragdrop list button on the toolbar menu and dragdrop fullname on your embedded browse

    hope this helps

      Re: How to display full name in a Browse object

      Oops, Francis left out one parenthesis

      fullname = trim(last_name + ", " + trim(first_name) should be
      fullname = trim(last_name) + ", " + trim(first_name)

      You can also use the minus sign ("-") to add (Concanetate) text together. It automatically trims the blanks. (Does the job of trim().)

      fullname = last_name - ", " + trim(first_name) or
      fullname = last_name - ", " + first_name - ""

          P,
          Welcome.

          I use this alot (alphafullname), however I create a field in the table for it, have the Field Rule> Field type> calculated with the expressions provided by Francis and Tim. I recommend this since you will likely end up wanting the "alphafullname" in more than one place (form) in your database as you build it.

            Mike

            There are advantages to having a calculated field with the fullname value.

            export comes mind.....

            But there is another option, a global calculated field.

            Edit table structure -(navigate the menu line)- table - global calculated field

            Have you tried that? It gives the field value without the overhead of storing it.

            The only disadvantage that I've seen is that a calculated field (global or not) can't be exported by the export operation. I'm not sure about xbasic referencing it.....

            But it does work well in other objects- form, browses, reports.....

              You can also make it into a function in your scripts. I am doing that now to keep from going back and forth with so many forms and reports.

              I have nickname, first, middle, last for up to 2 people to deal with.

                Dave,

                A whole 2 people. Wow, must be overwhelming for you !!:D I use commonname instead if nickname:

                Code:
                IF(ISBLANK("Commonname"), ALLTRIM(LASTNAME)+",  "+ALLTRIM(FIRSTNAME), ALLTRIM(LASTNAME)+",  "+ALLTRIM(COMMONNAME))
                Al,

                Your right of course. Jumping right into Global variables and writing an expression (such with each order expression) I thought might not be the best direction to send him/her (?), when new to Alpha.

                  Mike

                  It's actually a table-based global calculated field and is one step away from actually storing the data.

                  So I don't see much difference between a calculated field in a table and a global calculated field - except that the GCF doesn't have data storage redundancy.

                  It's not a global variable, that's a much different animal.

                  And sometimes getting the right features of Alpha in the beginning is the best time to talk about it. Otherwise you miss out on some of the best features....

                    Thanks again for the answers!

                    Here is another question for you guys:

                    How do I create an empty browse object?

                    As soon as I make one, Alpha five forces me to embeb at least one of the fields from my table. I wanna be able to only drag and drop the calculated field (fullname) in it without having anything else included in the browse object.

                    Any idea?

                        yeah, I tried it before posting but it doesn't seem to let me do that. I can't delete the extra column in the browse.

                          To delete a column, be in browse design mode, click the column heading, the whole column turns black, press delete, the column is gone...

                          Or what are the steps that you are using?
