Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5V7 hangs my system, selecting database

I used A5V5, V6 and V7 in my machine, and a day entering A5V5 the computer hangs completely, no key respond, I have uninstalled all A5 versions, cleaned the register wiht REGEDIT, eliminating all A5 and Alpha items related with AlphaFive, then i have reinstalled A5V5, but the problem persists, A5 starts and the first screen to select database also appears, but when a select a database (anyone, alphasports included) the system completesly hangs.

I have tried to unistall A5V5, clear the register, install A5V7, but the problem persists, when i select a database the systems hangs completely and no key respond.

I have searched in the forums but i have not found any post similar, a can't make a screen copy because the my computer hangs completely.

My computer is a pentium III-700, 512 Mb Ram, and the system is W2K-SP4.

    Thanks for your help.

Re: A5V7 hangs my system, selecting database

    Hi,

This question may seem a little "off the wall", but have you recently installed any new software?

The reason I ask is that I recently attempted an upgrade to IE7 (...on XP, but this may be a similar problem under Win2000), and it caused similar problems to those you are describing. Going back and selecting a restore point solved the problem...although I can't load IE7 on a machine with A5 on it!
    Regards,
    Darren Farmer

Open task manager and see what process(es) is/are using the most CPU....

Re: A5V7 hangs my system, selecting database

Well, I have not installed recently new software (or I dont remember), the only different things that I remember is that I have worked on database located on a Usb disc, and I where trying to access a SQL Database via A5V7. From this moment I could not work in any version of A4 (V5,V6,V7).

Another thing, my machine HANGS completely, no key respond (included CTRL+ALT+SUPR), so it's impossible to know wich processes are activated.

        Thanks for your support.

Attached is the A5STARTUP.LOG (winzip compressed), it may help Alpha Technical Staff to determine the problem.

Re: A5V7 hangs my system, selecting database

Since the problem occurs at database open, the startup log is already completed. Good idea, but I think the problem is after the startup of the program.

What patch of A5 are you on? Open A5 - help - about A5

Also you said that you open a database. Is it your database or AlphaSports? If it's your database, then try AlphaSports.

Also, what happens when you create a new database?

A p-III 700 mhz machine is not over powering in today's terms. At least it has 512 mb of memory which should be fine in W2K. But I'm reading in your messages that it did work previously on this machine. Correct?

I don't remember if W2K allows a system overwrite of the OS without formatting the harddrive. Sometimes I've had systems get currupted and an overwrite of the OS solves it.... Not sure if that's needed in your situation.

What anti-virus program are you using?

Also, start task manager, go to the process tab, sort on % CPU, then start Alpha and open a database and see how long you get results on task manager when you open a database.

              Thanks for your contribution,
The problem is not related to the version or the patch intalled, i on my
system i have worked with A5V5, A5V6 and A5V7 with no problems,
and on a given day ant A5 version HANGS COMPLETELY my System,
no CTRL+ALT+SUPR keys responds, and it happends with any database
that I want to open AlphaSports included.

My system is not very powerfull but i have worked since few weeks with no
              problem.

Can anyone help to determine the problem ?

              Thanks,

Re: A5V7 hangs my system, selecting database

regarding IE7 being a problem, I can report that it is not a problem for one of my clients where they are all running XP workstations and Server 2003 for the network. I can load a development copy on a workstation and make changes as well as open and run the program shadowed.

the one I'm worried about is Vista!! There's no telling what versions of Alpha will run on it.

I'll second Martin: Just downloaded and updated IE7 and all my databases in V7 open and respond properly.
