Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    missing "find by key" icon

    Hi experts
I have been using the "find by key icon" on a data base for a long time. Works great. Now it's gone, that is the dialog box for the "find by key icon". I click on the icon, the screen kind of flashes, but I can't find my "find by key icon" dialog box. The same results with CTK-K. I have restarted the data base & the computer many times. I know i must have done something to cause this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    old Tony

If memory serves this may be due to the stickiness of the dialog box. Alpha will try to open the dialog box in the same screen position you used the last time. If you change your screen resolution this can cause the dialog to be opened beyond the physical limits of your display. Try increasing your screen resolution. If you see the dialog drag it near the middle of your screen, then reduce the screen resolution back to where you want it. Let us know how it goes. --- tom

      thanks for the reply.
i am sure i caused this. I have two monitors. One is 1280x1024 & the other is 1600x1024.
The NVIDIA controller has lots of settings. I think I am at the max settings. I just tried spanning to both monitors. That was neat but did not help. Any idea on how to fix my mess up would be appreciated. I cant believe you experts take the time to help dummies like me.
      Thanks

Another thought is have you installed any new programs that run in the background. For instance I have a screen capture program (MWSnap) that runs when I boot up. If I don't turn it off, when I am in A5 and press control shift D (for date) I don't get the date. Instead MWSnap takes over and takes a snapshot of my screen.

        Just a thought.

I would suggest changing, temporarily back to one monitor. See if your graphics properties allow rotating the display. If so and you can rotate 90 degrees left, try that. I think that would put the far right portion of the screen at the top of the monitor. This should be where the find by key dialog is lurking. Drag it down, rotate back to the right, and you should be ok.
          There can be only one.

The position of many of the dialogs are remembered in the registry. You should find this at
            HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 7.0\xdialog.find_by_key.pos
or similar. If you reset the the x# and y# values to 0 the dialog should show top left.

Remember when messing with the registry be careful.
