Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Citrix and Alpha5 version 7 / 8

A "potential" customer called up and asked if our application will run on their Server which uses "CITRIX".

We have no experience with Citrix so any comments would be appreciated.

    BIG thanks.

CITRIX is a remote desktop connection tool. It allows a remote computer to see and control the desktop of a host computer.

Similar tools are VNC, PCAnywhere, and MS Windows remote assistance. Web based tools like GOTOMEETING.COM, GOTOMYPC.COM, LOGMEIN.COM do the same type of action.

They all control a desktop of the host computer from a remote computer. They allow a user at the host machine to watch and interact with the remote user (and vice versa)

They are not web based solutions like Alpha's web application server.

Alpha 4 and Alpha 5 will run with Citrix. I use it all the time to provide remote support to clients.

Another tool is MS Windows remote connection. It allows a remote user to connect to a host machine and have it's own window into that machine. No other user directly shares the window with them, but an administrator can view what a user is doing. This is an offshoot of Terminal Services and Citrix being combined by MS to get a solution....

So yes, your Alpha 5 desktop application can work with Citrix.

There is no need to have an Alpha 5 Web application use Citirix. Just not needed.....

In addition to what Al has said ... the key issues will (1) be the maximum number of concurrent users they anticipate will use the application and (2) the server itself - how much speed and memory, the OS and how many processors it has. So a lot depends on how they want to use your application. (I wouldn't agree with Al's comparison of Citrix to other tools like PCAnwhere or GoToMyPC. True, they each allow remote access to an application, but the comparisons don't go much further than that. But that's a separate discussion.)

With A5V5 we average around 25 - 30 concurrent users per server. I have no personal experience using V6 or V7 but another group I am aware of hosts a V7 application on Windows Server 2003 and they have pegged the maximum number of concurrent users at between 7 - 10, I believe. This is due to the fact that V7 can only use a single processor, even in a multi-processor server.

I was told that V8 will have a command line startup option to dedicate each instance of A5V8 on a Citrix/TS server to a particular processor. The faster loading and improved speed claimed for V8 will hopefully reflect itself in more efficient server performance. In optimistic theory, this could mean that we might be able to host 20 + users on a dual processor machine. This is all conjecture at the moment since I have seen nothing in the information released so far that confirms the above.

Obviously this is a huge issue for us. Unless V8 is able to address the separate processors of a multi-processor server, it will be, as far as our application is concerned, DOA. So I'd love it if Lenny could confirm that the processor-specific command-line option has, in fact, made it into the release version of V8.

Yes, this will be included as part of Alpha Five version 8.

            Great news, Lenny.

Now I can really start planning our next new version.

            Thanks

A little off the subject, but if anyone (maybe Al) is looking for an alternate solution for remote access of client's computers that doesn't cost anything, check out www.LogMeIn.com.

It works just like GoToMyPC.com, except that the basic service is FREE, and you can have as many computers under your account as you like. The free service is not ad supported, in fact it works exactly like the "Pro" version, except that you have to live without Remote Printing and File Transfer, but it's till very good for remote IT troubleshooting.

I use GoToMyPC for remote access to my agency's server, but LogMeIn.com for about 10 other computers that I do work on, and it really fills the bill.

Just some useful information. (Thanks jonnielaw for turning me on to it.)

(Incidentally, Citrix bought GoToMyPC.com from the prevous owners about 1-1/2 years ago. )
