Default Pdf driver will not install in x64

I just installed a fresh version of A5 Version 7 on a new server running Windows Server 2003 x64, and the pdf driver will not install. The message says that it's possible that I do not have the necessary permission to install print drivers, and to log on with administrator privileges.

The server IS logged on as Administrator, and the "Disallow kernel-based print drivers" group policy has been disabled.

I've read plenty of other posts regarding the failure of the pdf driver to install, but none of the answers seemed to deal with this new x64 processor, and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it?

Any other thoughts or suggestions as to why this driver will not install?

Do you run the installer in 32bit mode. Not everything will run in X64 mode. Just a hunch.

You should contact Alpha customer service.

The version of the pdf driver that comes with A5v7 is not 64 bit ready. A later version is.

I just saw your other posting.
Are you running a 64 bit version of windows 2003 server? or the 32 bit software on a 64 bit machine?

Good point Al, I guess I kinda confused everyone by not being more specific.

It's not my server, just one I'm installing an application on, but it looks like the platform is Windows Server 2003 R2 - Standard x64 Edition, SP1, and the processor is an AMD Optreron 250.

(Isn't the 64 bit processor an Intel thing?)

The PDF driver is not compatible with 64-bit processors. Alpha Five itself is a 32-bit application which may run in 32-bit mode on a 64-bit OS, but the PDF driver will not.

Is there any work-around on this? The program is running fine, the only problem is the pdf driver.

I got the full version of Adobe Acrobat installed on this server and it works fine. Now I realize that that really has nothing to do with the pdf driver used by Alpha 5, but since the acutal adobe drivers work, I'm just wondering if there is something I can do to get this problem resolved?

I do not have a 64X system and my hunch is just because in XP we can run the programs in w95, w98, NT, 2K compatible mode.

I think it could be located on the property tab of the program Icon. Right click on the Icon and look if there is a property tab with a choice for 64 or 32 mode. If that doesn't help try the Start, Help and Support button.

    --------------- added ---
Maybe it is not as simple as I said. I read in kb89445 that in a program such as IIS there is a switch Enable32bitAppOnWin64 that you can set to 0 or 1. But I think this does just make a chioce between a 64 binary or 32 binary. This information won't help you.

I don't know for shure but when a program is compiled for X86 - as Alpha Five - the program runs automatically in 32 bit mode and when compiled for X64 it runs in 64 bit mode. And most drivers are kernel mode drivers that means that they are compiled in the 'processor' type mode. You have to wait for a 64 bit version.

    And Lenny is always right....

I tried uninstalling A5 and re-installing it using the "Compatibility Mode" set to Windows XP, but I get the same message that the PDF driver is not installed.

This is a real serious problem, because this particular agency no longer has their old server, and as a result of having the "latest and greatest" server, they can no longer print reports from their WAS application, which is something they do sometimes 20-30 times a day.

Does anyone know (from the sneak previews) if Version 8 will be x64 compatible?

Maybe Lenny or Selwyn can shed some light on this?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a separate note, I went to the Support Page for Amyuni Technologies, and it looks like they have solved the problem within their own retail PDF applications, so it would seem that A5 could get the updated driver to patch their current versions of the software. This is directly from the Amyuni website:

Amyuni PDF Converter, 64-bit edition for AMD64 (x64) and IA64 processors released.

Starting version2.50e, the Document Converter printer driver is now supported under the 64-bit Windows XP/2003 platforms. This version is available for customers who have licensed the multi-platform verison 2.5 of the PDF Converter or Document Converter (RTF/HTML/XLS/JPEG/TIFF).

The following additional files are needed for 64-bit platforms:
    Windows XP/2003 64-bits, AMD 64 based:
    acfpdfuamd64.dll, acfpdfuiamd64.dll
    Windows XP/2003 64-bits, IA 64 based:
    acfpdfuia64.dll, acfpdfuiia64.dll

The download of the 64-bits version of our driver is available through our regular download pages. You can get the latest release at:
    PDF Converter: http://www.amyuni.com/en/products/pd...rter/demo.html
    Document Converter: http://www.amyuni.com/en/products/do...rter/demo.html

Yes, Alpha Five Version 8 will include an updated PDF driver which works on 64-bit operating systems.

    That's great Lenny.

Any chance of getting a patch or updated driver in the meantime?
