Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Videos mentioned in the Announcement forum

I did try to see the videos to know the enhancements and to get familiar with Version 8. The audio was not clear for the first few minutes. This is in all the videos I tested. It gets corrected after a few minutes.

Before I bring this to your attention, I thought I should check whether my system is handling other audios correctly. I checked and there is not problem in my computer.

Can we get a better recorded versions of the Videos please!!

    Thanks,

    RAM CHANDRAN

The recordings are OK, you have to let the program to download before it will play properly. I have dial up and when you click to listen to the video it starts playing by default. I click the stop button and wait for it to download and then it plays fine.
      Hope this helps,

Yeah they all worked fine for me too.

BTW, does anyone know how to get to the "What's new in Version 8" web page? I searched the A5 main main website and nothing came up except for the Alpha 4 - Version 8 info.

Re: Videos mentioned in the Announcement forum

To be honest with you guys (and ladies), I'm a little disppointed in the "What's New for Version 8" when it comes to the web application server. The security framework section was badly needed and looks great, and the client-side calculations for dialog components are nice, but I think the biggest complaint from most users is the speed of the web-based applications, and I don't see anything which shows that there have been improvements made that that area. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

New in Version 8 For the Web:

*Complete Security Framework for creating secure web applications without coding.
              * "Group" based security - security settings are made for different groups and logged in users are assigned to groups.
*New "Login" component makes it easy to build login pages without having to write code.
*More control over the layout of components - no longer limited to a rigid tabular structure.
*New "Maintenance Component" for re-indexing and packing .dbf tables on the server.
*Dialog component has client-side calculated fields - e.g. enter a quantity and have the total display without having to do a "round trip" to the server.
*Dialog component has client-side show/hide and enable/disable rules to automatically show/hide or enable/disable controls based on data the user enters into the form.
*Grid component supports "arguments" which can be used in filter expressions."Arguments" can be automatically bound to session or page variables, or to cookies. This makes it easy to create pages with filtered grids where the filter expression is based on values in session, page or cookie variables without the need for any Xbasic programming.
*Flexible new builder for editing and creating CSS style sheets.
*Improved HTML editor with tabs for fast switching between documents.

                Rich,
The only thing I found on the speed issue (I forgot which video) is that you now have an option to PRECALCULATE the page. The way I understand it is that when you PUBLISH the a5w page it will generate the HTML. That way when you call the page the HTML is already generated instead of waiting for V8 to generate the HTML on the fly. The example did not show alot of information to display but it definitely was faster than V7.

PS I just went looking and this feature is in the following video

Re: Videos mentioned in the Announcement forum

Yes I viewed that video and that does work very well, but that is really only of any benefit to someone who wants to see the calculation's results BEFORE they push the submit button. In that respect, once the user sees the calculation change on the screen, he or she might think that the data has already been processed, and forget to push the submit button anyway.

On the other hand, if some form of AJAX had been used, the calculation would be performed on the server rather than at the browser, and since the html doesn't have to be recalculated every time, the data would already be submitted, and the change would appear almost instantaneous, giving the user the "feel" of a desktop form rather than a web-based form. This would really make the web forms fly.

I was really kind of hoping to see some noticeable increase in the web forms performance.

Re: Videos mentioned in the Announcement forum

Client-side calculations and pre-calculated dialogs are not the same thing.

Pre-calculated dialogs have the html for the component pre-built before the page loads. This reduces the load time considerably, as the standard dialog has to create the html every time the page is requested. Depending on the complexity of the dialog, loading time for a pre-calculated dialog is only 60% or less of a standard dialog. This speed impact is on the server side for every page request.

Client-side calculations use JavaScript after the page is sent to the browser to hide / show controls, and calculate various controls on the browser without requiring a submit to the server. Therefore client-side actions are very fast, effectively the same as any desktop application.
