Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Help:Permission denied in webgrid when desktop application is closed

    Hi,

Does somebody know how to set properly the security within WAS?

    - I've set a master password for the database.
    - The security level of all grids is set to 0. (all logged in users can delete/update/create records).
    - I've set the session.__protected__securitylevel = 0 when a user log in.

When the (desktop)application is opened on the server all users can delete/update/create records in a webgrid.

But when the desktop application is closed they can only view the records. When trying to delete, add or update a record they get a error "Permission denied". Another side effect is that the webpages are loading two times slower.

Of course I could open the desktop application on the server, but that wouldn't be very secure/convient.

    Does somebody have a clue?

    Kind regards,

    Brendo

    Brendo,

Not sure I follow the logic here. If the database has a Master password, I assume that you are passing the password along in a page when the user accesses the web pages? Strictly speaking, the master password and the grid security level is two different things. Do you have the db master password settings set to prevent record editing? Maybe one concept is conflicting with the other?

      Well...

I'm not using the master password on webpages. It's not possible I think, I tried the function set_default_encryption_key but that has got nothing to do with permissions.

The reason why I must use a master password is that I've have some encrypted tables. You can only encrypt tables when you have set a master password.

When I test the desktop function "user_name()" on a a5w page I get the following results:

      a5v7 database application open:
      Administrator

      a5v7 database application closed:
      blank

When I remove the master password of the database and close the database, I won't get the permission error. But then I'have no encryption on the tables..
The loadingtime of the pages is still slow.

If the tables are encrypted, I found that all you need do is to place
          default_encryption_key_set("yourEncryptionKey")
at the top of your A5 code in the first page of your application.

            default_encryption_key_set("yourEncryptionKey")
I already tried that, with no luck :(
I putted on top of a common include file, before any table operation is used.

              hi Brendo

just wondering if you are still attempting to use "user_name()"

When I test the desktop function "user_name()" on a a5w page I get the following results:

              a5v7 database application open:
              Administrator

              a5v7 database application closed:
              blank
i think that this function is only usable in the desktop and not on an A5W page

              from the docs at
              http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...SER_NAME().HTM

              just a thought
              hth
              regards

I know that the user_name function must be only used in desktop application.
But It was just a test..
