Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Will A4v7 read an A5v7 Table

    Hi

Is it possible to have a lookup in A4v7 that will read a table in A5v7.
    Any comments appreciated.

    Barry,

Since A4 and A5 both read the data table (the x.dbf) with no trouble, the answer is yes. I just did it - took about 30 seconds - and it works fine, although I fail to see why you would want to do that. Mixing data between A4 & A5 is potentially asking for trouble.

      Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to mix any data, these are two seperate
Apps. It's merely a Lookup, and I want to use the DOS Application for Label
printing purposes which I have found to be very reliable n the past. Using
all the A5 versions for label printing is not as good from a label creeping down
      the page point of view.

I have searched the forums for Label printing problems and I find it's an issue
that has never been really resolved using Windows, I can get away with printing a few labels but when hundreds are printed daily the problems start, I
am using Avery 5/16 X 3.5 Inches 2 across and have tried every which way
including fine tuning gutter widths and margins to no avail also tried using a
Report format which gave me the best results but still not ideal.

If I post a question in the A5v7 forum I'm pretty sure I will be directed to
search for threads as it's been coverd so many times in the past. Hope this
      explains.

        Barry,

Now I understand why you're doing what you are doing. Actually, that is quite an innovative work-around.

This suggestion comes up so many times because many people just post a question without realizing/caring/knowing it has been asked and answered many times. People think that if the response is not preceded with their name, the solution isn't relevant to their specific problem. There is also a side benefit, in that it (hopefully) makes people aware of the vast knowledge pool that resides in the FAQs.

          Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply, the only problem I have is that A4 asks for an index.
          Any ideas?

            Barry,

When I tested it the other day, I used the default index of record number and that worked fine to test what you asked. I suppose you could create an equivalent index in both the A4 and A5 tables that met your needs.

              Dave,

Excellent idea, I don't have time this evening (UK time) but will try it
              tomorrow.

              Thanks

If you have A4 and A5 duplicate indexes you will have to update both to keep them synchronized. Easy in A4, just do an iua before printing the A4 label. (I don't do much in A4 anymore, but the letters are embedded in my brain).
